Gee, Rick, I was hopin' he wouldn't know that! Be fun to watch the expression, on his face, when he first drives it! Ed :D :D

an original transmission will work, along with any other gear drive with EXTERNAL brakes. you will need to reuse your top shaft (obviously) and flip and reshim the carrier.

you can use a cub cadet transmission with a wet brake, also. the wet brake was mounted on the countershaft in the gear reduction housing on the front of the transmission. the countershaft protruded forward to accomodate the brake, and would need to be cut off for a cub or a different cover welded up to keep the grease in. or you could use your Cub countershaft.

so the answer is that if its gear drive from the 1960's and early 70's, it will work, perhaps with a few mods.

Would you happen to know what models had the external brakes?

Thanks ED!! Go through all the trouble to drop one tranny, install the new, and then find out.!!! Actually, Bob in CT had informed of that info.

also . some of the gearing in the cadets are faster and or slower. any cadet 3 speed std tranny will work on the farmall cub prior to 1980. some of the cadet tranny castings werent drilled to accept the PTO shifter or rear rockshaft. as stated you have to flip the rear carrier. also ring an pinion teeth may or may not be the same. I have incountered less teeth on some cadets.Just wondering whay you want to use a cadet tranny? need a tranny casting?

The reason I am looking for a tranny is that I have a cub that have a tranny that makes noise in every gear. I was thinking of rebuilding but it probab ly has 1000's of hard hrs on it and most everything is spent. A cub cadet tranny has worked a lot less time would be in very useable condition.

Are you talking about whining noise, or grinding noise. If grinding, you have a bearing or two bad. not that big a deal to change.

I'm 99% sure the gears are ok. I did a physycal inspection and could not find an obvious wear of chipped teeth. To say whining or grinding, I'd actually say whining. It's noisy as heck in all gears.

The wife's Buttercub has a tranny out of a Cub Cadet Original. It was a pretty easy change over. I used the pto and other parts off her noisy tranny and put them on the cadet tranny. Don't forget to put all three expansion plugs in the front of the cadet tranny.

If you are using HYtran, which a lot of the later cubs used, try replacing with SAE 90 gear oil, you would be amazed at the difference in noise. Also, cubs , even ones with very little wear make a good bit of whining noise due to the gears being square cut.
