Cub Cadet 1000, No Spark

I picked up a 76 Cub Cadet 1000 over the weekend and I’m working on getting it back running. As the title states, It doesn’t have any spark. The guy I bought it from sent a Pertronix coil with it and it seems like a bit much for a Cub cadet, so before I go start buying more parts for it, what should I check?

I would dress the points and set the point gap first…..then check the coil. Coils normally fail when running and running when HOT.

I would start by checking for battery voltage from the battery to the coil, then the ignition points. Then inspect the points.

Original type coil will be fine.

Edit, next day. My opinion, very simple ignition system; battery, wires, ignition switch, coil, points, plug wire. Just need to identify the problem.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I’ve narrowed it down to either Points or the coil, so I’ll address the points first.I noticed the coil seems to have a Liquid coming out of the where spark plug wire attaches.

This post is almost a year old but I'd be interested to know if this engine is actually from 1976. I'm no expert on the subject but I wonder if the CC 1000 series LGT series dates back that far. Stan
EDIT: There's a lot of details from the beginning of IH production in 1960 until IH sold it to MTD in 1981 but appearantly there was a 1000 made in the late 1970's. Too complex to list all the details but it's available.
EDIT 2: Reference tractordata.com it was part of the "Quiet Line" Series, made 1974-1980 and had a 10 hp Kohler K241A engine, 3 different size cutting decks, manual and electric lift, 2 snow blowers and FEL. JMHO Stan
