I have a question for the group. I have an opportunity to buy a CC 100 off my neighbor, who has 2 that he's willing to part with. I want to use the tractor to mow with & maybe get a snow thrower for it. Both are original decent tractors, however one has a mowing deck, but isn't as nice & doesn't run as good (according to my neighbor). The one without the mowing deck is pretty nice original condition & supposed to run really well. Assuming that neither the deck or the engine, in the one, is junk, is it better to get the nicer tractor & get a deck later or get the tractor that already has the deck? In other words, is it easier to get an engine and or parts, if needed, or is it easier to get a mowing deck? The price of the two is about the same.

Cub Cadet 100's are nice machines, one of my favorites. Without knowing more specifics or seeing pictures it is kind of hard to offer advice. The one that "does not run as good" could be as simple as needing carb rebuilt or a basic tune up (minimum expense), or could be in the need of a total engine rebuild (more $$). Either way, they are tanks and money invested should offer many years of use, unlike the more modern ones. Most parts are easily available, pretty reasonable. They are fun and pretty simple to work on. Mower decks are fairly easy to find, depending on the area, many people don't use the decks and sell them reasonable (I did for a while :D ). Do either have any options (i.e. fenders, lights, creeper, lifts, spring assist, etc.) they can expand its use and double the value of the tractor. I would inspect the mechanical aspect of both, make sure something hasn't been modified and don't let paint or pretty sway your decision.

I think the best answer is to get both! :wink:

I'm with David on this, and here's the reason. If you want one good machine to do everything with, you will want both to take the best parts and make one good machine. In the end, if you really don't want the second one, you can certainly sell it and make your money back. However, speaking from experience, if I could get my hands on two, identical, Cub Cadet tractors, I would jump on it. It's awfully nice to be able to throw the mower deck on a second machine if the first dies out for some reason. Same with the snow blower, pretty nice to just put it on a machine and not have to take the mower deck off. Unfortunately, they are old machines and it's more likely than not that you'll be broken down at some point and wish you had a backup tractor. Go for both!
 
I know the info presented was somewhat limited & no photos make it harder, but I appreciate your detailed response. I guess my main concern was that it may be hard to find a mowing deck. Hey getting both is something to think about. Maybe I can work a deal. Thanks again!!!
 
Yes, finding a "good" mowing deck is difficult in my opinion. The other attachments, snow blade, snow blower, plow, etc., are fairly easy to find, but good mower decks for the older cadets are definitely hard to find. The good thing is they're easy to repair and maintain.
