Converting to Oil Dipstick

What is the common wisdom of converting to a dipstick for checking oil? It seems like a good alternative to removing plugs to check the level by noting if oil runs out the hole. I haven’t tried to remove the oil level plugs yet and since my B was nicely painted when I got it, I’m hoping the paint breaks loose when I do attempt to remove them.

Assuming you are talking about engine oil level, there should be a pair of petcocks in the side of the pan, not plugs. Steiner has them:

If you want to convert they have a dipstick conversion that goes in place of the upper petcock:

The petcocks are a bit of a nuisance, but they never bothered me enough to feel like changing anything.

If you are talking about oil level in the other gear cases, I'm not sure how you would go about changing them. They don't need checking that often anyway.

Yes, Jim, I am talking about the engine oil. Maybe mine does have petcocks instead of plugs. I bought my B last October in Wisconsin and almost immediately left for our 7 months in Florida so I barely got a chance to do anything with it. But looking forward to seeing it soon back in Wisconsin. I think I still like the idea of a dipstick better.

Thank you for your reply ajhbike. Steiner is probably where I’ll get mine too. Visited their store in Michigan last summer and thought it was pretty neat.
