Coming Back to the Family (Maybe)

I have been spending more time cruising the forum. I must tell you that the interest in Cubs is returning in a big way!

Should be in the new house in 4-6 weeks. Will be hunting shortly thereafter.

I can see the interest returning. The prices going down for a few years might actually draw new interest. The interest in homesteading and sustainability might be attracting new interest. Almost every day I see new YouTube videos about cubs popping up.

I am super rusty on the knowledge I once had and I hope y'all can help me.......................

There are about 12 Cubs within 20 minutes of where I am renting in NC while the house is being built. How reasonable is it to use a Cub for mowing 2 acres? I do not need a bush hog, just a finish mower. I am guessing that a belly mower would be the easiest to build. Is that correct? To run a belly mower, I am sure I need a rear PTO to drive the mower and hydraulics to raise and low the unit. Is bracketry unique for a mower, and if so what specifically should I be looking for? Is there a brand and model of mower you want to recommend?

I don't think a pull behind mower with work with a Cub because of the PTO setup. True? I don't want a pull behing mower with its own engines to turn the blades.

Any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I mow almost 5 acres all season long with a 68 Cub Lo-Boy with a C-3 Belly mower, the older I get the more I appreciate it being lower with a knee recovering from surgery it's even more important to me now. I have a 52 Cub with the 42 in C-2 Field mower , I love them both , I have also had the field mower on the Lo-Boy and it did just as well as the Cub mowing weeds and grass higher than the hood . I will say it's much easier to put a deck on the Cub than the Lo-Boy but they only come off now when the Snow blades go on in November. TJ
 
I'm thinking that the mower would stay on all the time. Maybe I would do a box blade or landscape rake. No real fields to be concerned with. Maybe doing some light grading and seeding to establish a decent "lawn".

In the area I am in now, Lo-Boys seem pretty scarce. I'd take the first, best priced, functional unit - standard or Lo-Boy. As mentioned earlier, I do prefer a magneto over distributor on an older unit. I'm a bit of a purist that way.
 
Well, I made my decision.....

I don't plan on buying another Cub for two reasons:
- The Cub will be alittle awkward on a smaller property
- Not the best machine for a front loader, if I could find one

Gonna look for a used SCUT like a Deere 755 or even a Massey Ferguson GC21...

Think I'll be better off in the long run. I'll still be lurking around tho.
