hello again, I have been reading this forum on clutch adjustments and need a little help. I have a 1959 I/H cub lowboy tractor and I am having clutch problems. it will grind when shifting into reverse gear and the pedal seems to be losing some clutch height when I let the pedal out. like maybe 1" up to the top when letting the clutch out to engage the clutch. how do I adjust the clutch and will adjusting the fingers 1/16" before touching the tob help. thanks again for the help.

Hi,
First you can check these more simple things.
It sounds like the clutch pedal return spring may have broken or is gone.
Use your hand and see if the clutch pedal pulls up.
All 3 pedals should have return springs under the platform, to hold the pedals up against the platform.
Use a light and look under the platform and see if the springs are there.
If the clutch pedal had no return spring, it would always go ahead, about 1", and the throwout bearing would touch on the pressure plate fingers.

I would oil the clutch pedal base if it hasn't been oiled lately.
Below is a page from the 1957 LoBoy operator's manual, showing adjusting the clutch pedal free play.
There is a pic of the clutch on the page also.
Adjusting the free play to 1" automatically sets the 1/8" distance between the fingers and throwout bearing, if the fingers are the right height.

It is common for the clutch pedal to get "sticky" or bind. Often this can be resolved by generous use of penetrating oil followed by pressing/releasing the pedal to work in the oil.
And definitely check the presence and condition of the pedal spring...replace as needed:

With your pedal all the way up, against the floor, how much of your pedal travel is free movement, before you feel resistance. It should be 1” and is adjusted at the base of the pedal. An extreme amount of play would indicate a very worn throw out bearing.

First, you need to make sure your clutch fingers are properly adjusted. There are 2 HOW TO's describing the procedure:

Once you are sure that has been done, and with the clutch pedal up against the platform, crawl under and see how far the throwout bearing is from the clutch fingers. The adjustment for that (for your later model tractor) is at the base of the clutch pedal. The distance between the TOB & the fingers should be about 1/8". If that is not what you have, loosen that bolt, and pry the pedal one way or another along the slot in the base, until you achieve that distance. Then tighten down the bolt.
NOTE: Ideally, with a good condition clutch assembly, this "should" achieve the desired 1" pedal freeplay. However, as things wear, it might not be exactly 1" freeplay.
