Clutch Dragging Starter?

1951 Farmall Cub all OEM. This tractor has done this forever. I have searched the topic but cant find much.
Starter spins the engine fast and starts instantly.
BUT, if I push the clutch in it won't turn over at all, just grunts and won't turn a bit. Let the clutch out and it whips and starts.
I read somewhere the TOB can create some drag, but that much?
What else could it be.
Is the cub supposed to be started with the clutch pedal out.

Two things I would check are -
1. Throw out bearing.
2. Battery cable at where it go by the clutch pedal.

Added - I start all my tractors in neutral with clutch pedal released.

This does not answer the question but early cubs only had magneto ignition and were intended to be started with a hand crank (battery ignition became available in 1950). JMHO. Stan

The throw out bearing does create some drag on the engine speed, but yours sounds excessive. Make sure the bearing is greased and your starter cable is large enough for the service and make sure starter cable connections are clean and tight.

your throw out bearing design should be started with pedal released, does the clutch and transmission work normally when running ?

Yes, normal operation after start.
Is it ok, or normal procedure to rub some grease onto the face of the TOB.
I have never seen one out of tractor, does the face of my bearing spin or slide on the fingers.
I did grease the fitting after I took this picture.

the bearing is not really a bearing, it does not turn, it has a grease fitting, it is made from graphite and just wears against the clutch fingers, there is a
4 " hole to grease through, look in the owners manual it will show you

I did put a generous amount of grease in the fitting. After a few hours of running it might get better.
Thanks for the information.

The TOB has a pretty large cavity for grease. You want to keep pumping until it comes out a weep hole on the opposite side of the zerk.

I usually put a very thin coat on the face when I install a new one. I figure it will help get the bearing off to a good start. Although I don't routinely do it, the other day I was regreasing one and smeared a bit on the face. It hadn't been greased in who knows how long. I don't see how a little bit could hurt. If you put much on, it will get thrown off by the pressure plate fingers. Wouldn't want it to land on the disk.

to much grease the worse that happens is it may smoke a little out if the bell housing until its burned off

Is there anything in the bell housing that's normally hot enough to make grease smoke? I can't think of anything.

If I saw smoke running out of the bell housing I'd call the fire department or at least get the garden hose.

I start mine in neutral with the clutch released. It won't hardly turn over with the clutch pushed in.
