Cleaning A Rusty Oil Pan

I have an old oil pan that was covered with rust inside and out. I ended up having to sand blast it to get it looking good. I will not be giving this a nice coat of paint just yet, however I will be using Rustoleum primer on the outside to prevent any rust while it sits on a shelf. Should I primer the inside as well or use something else to protect it from rust while stored?
 
I use OSPHO brand to give it a protective coating. Won't hurt anything to brush/spray it on there before painting as well. Pics before and after coating. JMHO Stan

Wasn't sure how any coating, whether it was paint or something else, would react with motor oil. I would rather use paint or some type of lubricant such as coating it with oil since it will be used with motor oil in the future.

You could brush some grease on the inside of the pan to keep it from rusting. Give it a wipe before using it and any grease that remains will be compatible with engine oil.
We used to brush grease on our plow shares after use to keep them from rusting.
 
You could wipe it down with Fluid Film, it's a lanolin based corrosion preventive and lubricant. I first found out about it on an RTV forum to help prevent rust in the floorboards. I have since seen that it's frequently used for under spraying automobiles. I wipe down most tools with it. It's safe to handle and is a great lubricant. (Yeah, I love the stuff)
 
I like Ricky's grease idea. Does Fluid Film need to be removed before adding oil to the pan when it does go back on or does it mix well with oil?

It wouldn't take much to protect it. I wouldn't think any residue left after wiping down, before using, would be an issue. I don’t know for a fact, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks David. I will look into that as well as Ricky's idea.
 
Fluid film is great. I would not have a problem using it in the oil pan. A thin coating of grease as Rick said is good as well.

I would not paint the inside. The pan is not cast so I would not use Glyptal on it.
