Calling All Super C and Super A Owners

I have two questions for you folks. I am contemplating removing and cleaning the oil strainer on my Super C Touch Control in the near future. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for the job? There's not much about it in the manuals.

Second question. Does anyone have a C-123 engine equipped with an oil dipstick? Mine does, but the engine is a former power unit engine. See the photo below. The dipstick on mine reads the oil level way wrong and I think it's a result of an incorrect dipstick/oil pan combination. Can you post some photos of what you have? Thanks.

Working with the strainer on the touch control is pretty much the same deal as with a Cub, except you have the luxury of removing it without any major teardown. It'll probably be crushed, just like the Cub strainer usually is. If it was me I would take it out, clean it in kerosene, etc. and put it back in. Long as it remains a closed system I don't think the strainer's that important to start with.

That dipstick doesn't look like anything I've seen before, but since it's a power unit engine, who knows. It is in the right place though. You need a dipstick from a 200, 230, etc.

Don, I have the dipstick on my SA and will photograph and measure it today. Then I will post for you (along with the long-awaited info on the oil pan!).

That dipstick is one like on my 140's. I will have to double check the Super A's and 100's to see what they have. It is possible that Dale's is an engine from a later model tractor. I have also seen dipsticks like yours before Don, but can't recall where or what it was on. I will have to double check.

Don, my engine was apparently changed out at some point because it is a 123 with no serial number. The dipstick is listed in the parts manual for the 123 engine. Here are some photos:

Just out of my curiosity, your tractor has a power unit engine with an oil dipstick, and the oil pan petcocks? Maybe the petcocks couldn't be used on a power unit due to the shroud or mounting frame? I get asked often, where's the dip stick on my SC. 8)

There are currently no petcocks in my oil pan. However, there are two threaded holes with pipe plugs in them where the petcocks would go. I'm guessing that the original power unit oil pan was much deeper than the one on a 123 installed in a tractor. If I can't find the correct dipstick parts for my oil pan, I will revert to the petcocks.

I would agree Don, that most likely the power unit oil pan was removed and the tractor oil pan installed when the engine was installed. I don't know what the difference between them would be. I imagine that when they did the swap they decided petcocks and a dipstick were redundant and opted for the dipstick. However, the dipstick is probably only accurate with the power unit oil pan in place.

Thanks. I'll be on the phone tomorrow morning. There is another part that goes with the dipstick, so I'll see if they have that, too.

Believe it or not, every once in a while Wenger's has something for a reasonable price. I got a complete colter for the Cub fast hitch plow for $50 a couple of years back.

To update everyone, I have the parts I need to convert from the power unit dipstick to the tractor dipstick. I'll post a photo after it's finished.

the 123 i have in my 240U has the dipstick in the 'more normal' centered location on the block, as i recall.

Don i just replied to the answers to the questions about my nephews super a and i mentioned that the replacement engine that he is using has the same "c" shape cast in where it mounts to the bell housing just as your pictures show. thanks for the pictures, ron
