Saw this on craig's list and, well you know the rest of the story, it had to follow me home.

Long typical story. Guy started restoring his Dad's tractor. sat on the fence row 25 years. engine shop rebuilt the engine, he put all new bearings and bought lots of parts. as I'm looking at it he says that there was white paint under the red on all the parts he blasted, but he thought the tractor was a 51. I admit that I failed to correct him. several parts not yet blasted show white paint and all the casting codes are December 49, correct for an early January demo. His Dad passed, he divorced and lost his repair area and interest.

He was missing a few parts, and the sheet metal is poor, but as luck would have it, I parted a Super A and had most of what i needed.

Traded for the sheet metal, just need to pick up.

A winter project!

Hey Art-

Congratulations on the C! After YEARS of working on the one you helped me with, and thanks to a lot of Covid related spare time, i'm within a few weeks of having mine done. I've had a great time with it; thanks again for your help.

I've got a pretty complete '48 parts tractor if you come up short on anything.

lots of shop time with covid and not being able to travel. working on the C demo. picked up replacement gas tank, hood and grill from a local guy. traded for some Super A parts i had. sheet metal was poor that came with the tractor, the grill was wrong, gas tank ugly, tool box poor, and the list went on.
most other parts i had on the shelf, good starter, carb, manifold, governor, etc. had to pull the head to clean up 10 years of being open to the atmosphere. but it's coming together nicely.

It's been in the back of my mind to look at the oil pump and bottom of the engine. It was rebuilt at a 'engine shop'. I have no more info than that.
Also needed to install a bushing in the clutch pedal cross-shaft as it was worn badly. once i got that done and re-assembled everything, it appeared as if the clutch was stuck. Time to remove the front pedestal and then the engine and put it on the bench for a deeper look.

found a few things.

c reman clutch re.jpg

the reman clutch in the first photo is pressed against the retaining spring and cannot move any further. therefor it cannot work. junk.
fortunately I had two good used clutches on the shelf for C113 class engines. sandblasted one up and installed it. works correctly now.

engine install - re.jpg

found no lubrication on the pilot bushing or the TOB carrier.

Found NO cotter pins on the rod nuts! no excuse for missing that in an engine shop! Took apart the oil pump - it was lubed and had a new gasket, but the cover was badly warped and corroded away. pump body was good, shaft and gears. it was also missing the fine screen on the pick-up. I had another pump cover that needed just a little straightening and some truing up and reassembled it. I don't believe the engine would have held oil pressure with the junk cover.

All fixed now and back assembled. I just shows that you have to check everything!
