I have an IM 500 rotary cutter. The company is out of business so there are no manuals. I drained the oil in the gear box, and then put in a pint although only about half a pint came out. There are no obvious leaks. I was watching youtubes and a couple people said that you need to put in not too much or not too little because it could damage the internals. Any words of wisdom?

Thanks, Don. I saw the m offered while googling but never thought to check them out. I finally found a few parts of the manual as well. SC is half the HP recommended, but wet will give it a try. Runs good whacked some marsh cattails, PO who I trust (bought the 200 cultivator and take from him) used it a few times a year since he got it and he kept it greased...although feel a bit short on the hear oil. Not bad for $100.

Not bad for a hundred bucks. I wish I could find one as nice as yours looks for that price. Don has you covered on the gear oil, I think half full is what your looking for, leaving plenty of room for expansion. I'm looking for a five footer as well, all I seem to find is beat up, rusted out, old junk and they want 400 to 600 bucks. I'd like to find a medium duty unit but the listings are woefully lack on details, takes some effort/searching to try to figure what they have.

I believe most 5' cutters require 25 HP and up and the SC is a bit short but I think your will setup will be just fine. I plan to use an overrun coupler and a slip clutch or shear bolt. If it has a shear bolt set up I want to be sure that it's not been replaced with a regular bolt. I did find a JD 503 trailer type cutter, looks pretty decent, the guy's asking $550. Let me know how yours does with some heavier stuff, although cattails can be tough. :coffee:

Yea...one thing I have to change is the shear carriage bolt that the PO used. He said it worked well but i would rather use a shear pin. I am to be summoned to clear some brush for the local land trust so I will let you know how it goes.
