Break your brakes? I did.

I took the left side apart this morning and then put it back together this evening with new bands & pads, gaskets, and oil seals from TM (I forgot to order an inner seal so had to wait for Napa to get one in at 4:00 or I would have been done earlier) I pulled the axle shaft and drum, cleaned the drum to bare metal and wire brushed just about everything else.

The rivets on the new pad stuck out too far so I had to grind them down to fit the brake band inside the housing.

Below is my non-functional left brake. One eyelet was split, and the pivot pin was snapped. I made a new pin from 5/16 grade 8 bolt (the non threaded section) What a difference the new brake pad makes! Next up, the right hand side.

Hi,
I'm not sure what you mean, if you used a new brake band or a used one.
The rivets have to be countersunk into the new brake lining, like they are on the old lining in your pic.
The rivet heads will rub on the brake drum if they are not countersunk into the lining.

There are special drill bits to use to make countersunk holes.
If you put the lining on the band without countersinking the rivet holes, you should remove brake band and countersink the holes.

When putting the final drive on the Cub, be sure the brake pin is in the holes at both ends of it before tightening the 6 bolts holding the final drive on the Cub.
It can break the casting to tighten the bolts if one end of the pin is not in the hole for it. :)

I used a new brake band from TM. The rivets were properly countersunk into the pad but stuck out the back of the band around 3/16" - I couldn't properly fit the band inside the final drive casting without grinding down the excess rivet material approximately halfway. Grind too far and the pad can pop off the band!

Yes, I made sure the pin was properly located as the bolts were snugged up - I've seen cracked bellhousings on vintage cars before, fortunately not by my hand!

Thanks for saying.
Below is TM Tractor's listing for a new brake band with lining.
The pics don't show that it has rivets sticking out like yours did.
Maybe you should tell them that the rivets cause a problem with it fitting right.

The pads they sent me are different color and pad type but same dimensions (aside from the rivets out the back) They removed/tore off whatever stickers were on the plastic packaging for the brakes but the oil seals were still in factory boxes.

Hi,
Thanks for pic of the new brake band.
The problem looks like the rivets are not riveted enough.
They need riveting more, so they hold the lining well.

There are riveting tools, like punches, one goes in a vise, you hold the band in the right position, and the rivet head against it.
It holds the rivet in the hole, the other tool had a curved shape made in the end of it, so it makes the curved shape of the rivet.
2 people works better for it, 1 holds the band, 1 hammers the rivets.

The original band you took out of the Cub probably has the right shape rivet ends, you can look at it and see the shape.

Don't cut the new rivets off, they will just be loose.
If you cut off many of the new ones, you need to take it apart again, and buy rivets for it, and rivet them in place better.

I'm not sure where to buy riveting punches, or riveting tools, whichever they are called.
McMaster Carr might sell them, they are online.
You have to buy the right size punches for the size of rivets they are.
They might have new rivets too.
I have riveted the linings on before.

You should tell TM Tractor the rivets are not fully riveted in place, and stick out too much to put the band in position.

Your bands look just like the replacements I got a couple of years ago from some place out in Iowa. Instead of the woven material it is more like automotive brake shoe lining. Mine have been working fine, but not sure they are as effective as the old style woven lining.
