Bondo still the Best option for pitted metal?

Working on repairing a sickle mower... some parts are badly pitted after getting the rust out. Is Bondo still the best pre-paint option for a clean/quality job. I read a post from 2005, that's what I gathered from all of it.

Thanks,
Ben

That's what I would use if you want the pitted texture gone. They are many different types and quality of plastic fillers. You can get some with fiberglass hairs in it to help if it has some smaller pin holes. The fibers help bridge the gaps and give a stronger bridge of the gaps .

USG makes a filler called Icing. It’s a lite consistency filler made for skim coating. It comes in a large squeeze tube and uses the same hardener as other fillers. It sands easier than ordinary fillers and feathers out nice. It’s my “go to” for such jobs. Any auto parts store, that handles paint supplies, should have it.

A spray on primer with bondo sounds like a nice way to avoid mixing/steps. I'll look into the other options as well. Thanks everyone.

If you are certain all the rust has been removed from the pitted areas, this may not interest you. However, if there is some rust in the badly pitted areas, you can spray it with a rust converter, such as Picklex 20. It converts the rust into iron phosphate. Then you can apply bondo or primer. The stuff is expensive.

I used bondo on my snow blade, first ground off the worst of it then used rust converter and followed with bondo to fill in pits. sprayed couple coats of gloss paint . only did the front so snow will flow off easier

I have had very good success with a similar product called OSPHO, available in quarts and gallons at my local hardware store. It is the viscosity of water and can be sprayed, brushed, dipped, etc. JMHO.

Bondo makes a product called Glazing & Spot Putty which is basically thick primer in a tube. It is sandable in 30 minutes (if applied in thin coats) and can be used to fill small imperfections. It sands easier than bondo resin. Glazing & Spot Putty is available in other brands and can be found in the automotive paint/prep area of any decent auto parts store.
