best way to remove the small steering box filler nut

I can't get the small square head filler nut out of the steering box because the steering rod is in the way. I tried hammering on the ratchet side of a 1/4" extension, but the square head on the bolt is too big. Does anybody have any good tips for me to try? I don't have a welder so I can't weld anything to it. Other than removing the steering rod to get better access, I'm at a loss.

Are you talking about the one on top next to the grease fitting? If memory serves me right I would just remove the headlamp and use a wrench (with maybe a small pipe for some extra "oomph" if needed).

I actually need to check and replace the steering box oil on my Super A tomorrow, I can let you know what I run in to.

No, I'm referring to the smaller one that faces towards the driver's seat. It's on the rear side of the steering box, in between the engine block and the steering (wheel) rod.

I just went out and checked my Super A. A 5/16 wrench fits snuggly on it and it broke loose easily (and I know for a fact its been over 5 years since I tried to turn it). If it's tight you should have enough room to get a little piece of pipe (or whatever) on a wrench for extra leverage. IMG_20260701_121654~2.jpg

There are square sockets made for such applications (might be a little hard to find. I would consider making a wrench from a piece of 1/4 x 1 flatbar to fit the square head of the plug or maybe a square 1/4 or 3/8 drive socket would fit it then you could use a bolt or coupling nut in the socket with a wrench on that to turn it.
