Belly mower

I bought a cub and I’m putting a new belt on my belly Mower. Before I took the old one off, I noticed that after it was at full power and then I let off the power with the clutch that it made a ratcheting loud noise until it stopped, once I started it up ( full rpm) the noise went away, but every time I let off power, the ratcheting sound started up again. Is this normal or is there something I need to adjust or put in a new part? Thank you.

Normal. That ratchet allows the momentum of the spinning mower blades to disconnect from the transmission. If it were a solid connection instead, the spinning mower would continue to push the tractor forward even though you pushed the clutch in until the blades spun down.

Just guessing but it may be equipped with an overiding clutch. This allows the mower to wind down. Vern

What brand/model mower are you asking about? If the noise is from the drive mechanism on the mower it's probably the overrunning clutch device that allows the blade to keep spinning when you clutch/stop the forward motion of the tractor. This keeps you from running over something when you have to suddenly stop the forward motion and the mower spinning keeps the tractor moving forward. It might need some cleaning or maintenance but it sounds like it's doing what it's supposed to do. JMHO Stan

I greased it in the zerts and it is a loud ratcheting noise not quiet. Ii doesn’t sound like grinding noise just that loud ratcheting racket. Thanks for the advice!

As Tim (tst) stated above, one to two drops of oil in that hole is all you want to put in. If it's over lubricated, it can cause slipping, especially as you hit dense pockets of grass.

But you DO need to generously grease the spindle.

the jaw pieces wear down fast and start jumpin then it wont run the blade at all and the spring also gets weak so limit the amount of over run you make it do!!

Expensive. Multiple hundreds of dollars as of a couple years ago.
When I had one that started to skip, I didn’t have available funds to replace the mating ratcheting parts that were rounded over. I got out the angle grinder and dressed up the mating surfaces to see if I could get some more life out of the parts in hand. It turns out the answer is yes! With a steady hand, some patience, and a lot of trial fitting to make sure all of the newly dressed teeth were going to engage equally, it worked great. There’s a thread on here about the process.

I have a c-2 and it makes a lot of noise when the clutch engages. The PO welded it and and runied the parts. it was a lot of money to get replacements. As TST said some oils and or grease. (there are zerks on the c-2) a good idea. The Woods 42 does not make nearly as much noise.

I appreciate everyone’s replies. It definitely is a ratcheting noise but is very loud. Maybe I should replace the whole spindle? I’ve included a picture of it so I can identify the manufacturer. I think it is the IH mower but not for sure. Picture attached if someone can help be identify it for sure so I can order the right parts. Thanks.

That's a Danco/IH C-2 mower. I doubt that you can find a new spindle. They aren't hard to take apart and you might find an easy repair to quiet it down. There is probably a parts diagram in the resource section. Muleboss' diagram is not for the C -2 (maybe a Woods??).

You can probably find an aftermarket replacement spindle assembly for the mower. I had a similar problem several years ago and found that OMNI GEAR, Houston TX makes such parts and actually bought one for a KINGCUTTER finish mower that I own through the FORD tractor parts dealer at that time, part #9828507 FORD 930B 60 in. finish mower. The main thing to be aware of is the rotation of the shaft and get one with threads that the nut that holds the blade on the correct threads, either LH or RH so the nut won't back off while in use. You can search the internet for contact, a brochure that I have lists www.OmniGear.com and shows the part as MD-20. Good Luck Stan

Also you could try placing a WTB add in the VINE, Classified forum. Someone might have a parts mower that would sell you a spindle. It worked for me locating parts for a Pennington finish mower and CUB EXPRESS delivered it to me. JMHO Stan

The C-2 makes a lot of noise until the blades stop. I rebuilt the spindle (bearing and other parts) and had to replace the clutch, as mentioned, because of the PO welding. It is just how they are made. It is working as it should; it is just loud. A new spindle is not going to reduce the noise. The Woods 42 is very similar, and it does not make as much noise..
