I have propane fireplace/logs. lately when i flip the switch to turn it on, nothing happens so i turn it on and off several times then it lights. some time turn it on and after a few seconds it will light. I was thinking the pilot generator could be bad, but i have heard that they are either good or bad and ive heard that it will generate enough millivolts to keep the pilot lite but not enough to open the valve. If I tap on the valve i seems to help. could the electromagnet that opens the valve be sticking? can i take it apart and lube it? What lube would i use?

if its a 2 wire MV system
you should read 750 mv across the wires with the pilot running
make sure the pilot flame is just touching the bulb and not completely ingulfing it

Ok mv is 520 . 312 with burner lite. Takes several times flipping the switch to get it to light.

ayup it needs to be replaced.

wen the mv gets around 500 they are shot

also dont mess with or take apart the control valve if it is bad just replace it.

ya dont need a leaky control with Lp it tends to puddle up on the floor or other low spot

Ok I replaced the complete pilot assembly. It works like new now. Is the very tip of the metal pilot light tube supposed to get red hot?
