Allis Chalmers Hydralic Oil

A slow leak in my Allis Chalmers hydraulic system necessitates topping off, because I've finally lost operation of my snow plow. The manual calls for straight 20w oil, which doubles as the lubricant in the transmission. Can't find straight 20 w anywhere. I'm sure I have some hydraulic oil on hand and according to what I've gathered online, it can be used. I know for a fact that going with anything heavier won't operate my hydraulic system properly - especially in our cold climate. I also have 0w/20 synthetic on hand. Manual also calls for non-detergent oil and am wondering if today's 0w/20 synthetic would be problematic. Looking for guidance as to the best course of action.

I'll go with that, Gary. I have a lot of confidence in your experience. Snow's falling and thanks for the response.

i use transdraulic from TSC in my 190 --- still works after 20 years, hyd leaks into the rear end so gotta drain it from rear end and dump it back in the hyd side! -- I dont use the 190 all that much so NOT gonna go to the trouble of puttin new seals in it.

I was assuming my hydraulic plow's issue was a lack of oil in the system. So, I attempted to pour some oil in and it ended up a foamy mess all over the floor. Fluid kept coming out as though it was alive! I've drained the system now but am uncertain as to the cause of the malady. Tractor is stored inside, so water entering the system seems unlikely. It could have been over-filled thus causing the foamy fluid. Going to fill it today and see what happens. Pump seems OK because it showed signs of life when I attempted to lift the plow, but all it managed to do was to tighten the lift chains; plow never came off the floor. The good news is that I had some Zep spill dryer on hand and tossed it all over the floor under the tractor. Still gotta clean up the mess, but that's the least concern for now.

pick up tube to pump broke off and pump sucking air would make oil foam. sounds like time to tear into hyd system!! The longer you mess with it the more damage you will do to the pump!

Glad to report that my ol' AC IB is back in action. Did some snow plowing and some logging work already today. After a complete draining, added some AW 32 hydraulic oil and works like new again. So happy. One reason for foaming hydro oil, according to the manual, is over-filling. Seems strange it never acted up before since I hadn't any issues since installing a newer final drive 10 years ago. Sure glad I had some Zep oil dry on hand to clean up the gooey mess. Great stuff and will always have it on hand for emergencies. Let it snow!

Short video taken a few years ago with me on my Allis Chalmers IB (industrial model B) plowing snow. As I recall the temperature that day was 4 below zero.
