Acquired a Farmall 230

After some inspection on the governor, it doesn't have much wear in the spring holes and the needle bearings feel smooth, so I will just clean it up and put it back on the way it is. I suppose I should clean up the front of the engine and put some paint on what is exposed with the front end removed.

Cleaned up the governor housing and pulley today. Shot some rattle can primer and paint on them along with the timing gear cover. Only painted them to prevent rust for now.

Scraped the old timing cover gasket off the front of the engine and cleaned a bunch of greasy crud out of the webbing on the front of the block.

My original plan was to just get the oil seal replaced, but at this point with the whole front end off I figure it would be easier to do some extra paint work now and then I won't have to pull everything back apart to paint later. I started by scraping all of the greasy crud out of the inside of the steering housing. Plan to sandblast it to finish cleaning area's that I couldn't clean by hand. When I removed the front bolster and wheels , I found the tube to be half full of water. I need to see if there is a drain hole somewhere on it. Don't want that filling up, freezing, and breaking it.

I noticed some oil weeping out of the steering gear housing so i decided to pull it apart and change the seals. Then I could put some sealer on the gaskets and bolts to try and stop the leaks. Pulled the gear assy apart and noticed a crack in the lower bearing seal cage plate. I'm stating to clean things up now to get a good look at it. Figure on seeing what a used one costs and then decide if I will weld/braze this one up.

I would replace the spring in the governor while its apart and check the pivot arm for wear, seen several worn out

The parts looked pretty good to me but I will inspect it again just to be sure.

the spring always looks good, they lose there strength and stretch to easy under load, kinda like shocks in your car, slow death and do not know how bad they were until you put new ones in

:thanx: Good to know.

Found another small crack in the seal plate (first pic). Cleaned and inspected the both bearings, bearing cage plate, and the pedestal steering shaft. Just need to blast the housing, pedestal, and wheel centers to get this front assy ready for paint.

Got the wheel centers and pedestal blasted and treated with Ospho. Since I have them pulled off of the engine I am going to clean up the water pump and fan assy. The nut holding the worm gear shaft in the steering housing is fighting me. I guess I need to warm it with the torch to loosen it up. Once that's out I can clean the housing. I ordered a couple seals that should be here by Monday.

Had to use some heat and cheater bar to loosen the worm shaft cap. Made a loud pop when it came loose and then threaded out mostly by hand. Removed the shaft seal and it is now ready to sandblast. Need to clean and check the bearing to see if it needs replacing.

The seals for the steering housing arrived today. Pulled the rocker cover and thermostat housing off and prepped for paint. The rocker cover has been mostly bare metal since I pressure washed the tractor just after I bought it. Now I can finish cleaning the front of the block and spray a little paint behind these parts before reassembly.

Cleaned up a few more parts and added the oil pan. Starting to suffer from mission creep. The pan was mostly bare metal like the rocker cover so I may as well add it to the paint list. Blasted the fan assy and boiled up the pan and steering housing to clean the oil and grease off. I used the hot water and a brush to clean the crud off the water pump. Its a little noisy when I spin it but the bearing feels smooth. Not sure whats up there. May need to replace it.

Broke out the hammer and dolly and finished smoothing out the oil pan. No perfect by any means, but good enough. I'll put a before pic of the pan as it was when I bought the tractor.

Nice work on the oil pan! (You have a before picture on page 1 of this thread.)
I thought I had posted it before. When I paint it you will still see some waves and hammer marks but mostly down low so most will not notice it much.

Finally got the steering housing blasted and treated with Ospho. Now to get set up somewhere to spray some primer.

Bought a new water pump because the bearings were noisy and probably not far from failure. Shot some primer and paint finally.
