49 Cub PTO grinding

Hi Everyone, great website, lots of info. Here's my problem. Was out mowing somewhat tall grass this weekend and after a few passes, the PTO started grinding loudly. I stopped, disengaged it and tried again. Same thing, mow a few passes, then more grinding. at this point I stopped, not wanting to do anymore damage. Was mowing with the deck raised high, so as not to bog the engine down, the grinding at the end was hit and miss, but definite. Any thoughts? Thanks again, Brett

There is a good chance that the pin on the lever has worn and is not sliding the clutch far enough forward to catch the splines on the drive shaft. Also possible that the splines are worn and won't engage the clutch. Remove the fill plug on top of the tranny. You'll need a small flashlight to shine in and see if you can see what happens when you move the lever back and forth. If it's the lever, you can remove it and get a new one, or replace the pin. If the splines are worn, much more work is involved.

Edit: Here's a link to the section in the GSS-1411 Blue Ribbon Service Manual. You'll need to skip past the belt pulley sections. http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Blue%2 ... Pulley.htm

As Bob suggested, likely the lever pin is worn, I just addressed the same problem. My pin was halfway gone and the previous owner had altered the lever guide bracket to allow it to go farther back. :? It is a fairly easy fix, the link that Bob supplied shows what needs to be done. Hamilton Bob has the whole assembly for about half of what I found just the shaft for ($39) and they are a site sponsor!
