48 Head Bolts--Stonethrow

While tinkerin with Pappy this weekend, Corky and I took off the radiator and some other parts long overdue for some cleaning....got a whole lot more to go to! :D We were tempted to pull off the head as well and see what lied beneath. We resisted much temptation to do so (believe it or not! ) We didn't have any extra head bolts just in case one broke off, so we decided we probably shouldn't! So, I was curious if anyone coming to Stonethrow Cubfest had any extra head bolts. I was going to try to pull the head off there if time permits! Can't wait to see everyone! :{_}: :{_}:

i don't have any but if you want me to check with the IH dealer near me i could see if they have any, if you want new ones.

Jason, some guys don't reccommend using the bolts over so I don't know if Ralph sells them. If you are looking for used ones shoot him a pm. He will be there for a while Friday or I could swing by his place and grab them for you.

I would definately prefer new ones if someone has them. Phil, I didn't know there was an IH dealer over there, or I probably would have called. However, if you have time to check on them, that'd be great! :{_}:

I have some used ones I can bring, I also have plenty of grade 8 bolts that I use. They just need to be cut to length and that is super easy.

I will bring them.

Hey guys,

Quick question: How many long and how many short bolts are used in the head? I'm looking into picking up a new set this afternoon from a local IH dealer....thanks!!

Charles, there are 9 short and 6 long bolts. A complete set would cost just over $90.00

Thanks Bill. Ole Corky won't be buying those just yet...not in the budget this month!

Jason, here's the part info from TM's website, and 5 dealers in our area that might have them:

Fastenal sells grade 8 bolts that many have used/recommended. Going from my poor memory.. either the long or short were exact size, others were slightly longer. I believe the set was around $15. I got an "extra" while I was ordering, if you want them, you can have them if Barnyard can swing by and get them. :D

Good luck,

Yeah, I don't think the $90 is in the budget for me this month either  I'd defiantely be interested in the set from Fastenal if they are in fact the correct size!

I know I have the correct short ones. If you can get the set of long ones, i will modify them for you so that they are correct.

I am loading now, so i wioll get back on here with a definate count of what I have.

What is the size, thread count and lengths for the bolts...they are not listed on TM or in the Parts Book.

Dave,

I had "issues" with the head on my '51 just over a year ago. I searched my threads and found the following:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=44996&hilit=head+bolt&start=15
This revealed:
Looking at the engineering drawings for head bolts: 251231R1 is 3 5/16 long with 13/16 full thread required. It was changed from 3 3/8 long in 1945 so there must have been a need to shorten it.
251230R1 is 2 3/8 long with 13/16 full thread required. This part was revised from?? And redrawn in 1955, so can't tell you what it might have been before, if different. The parts system is substituting a 2 1/4 bolt for this so that is why the dealers will tell you it is 2 1/4. But 2 3/8 is original; I believe

And I see by my final reply the shorter ones from Fastenal are the ones that are longer than the original ones.
Thanks everyone for the help! I used the Fastenal ones, long ones are a match, and short ones are 1/8" longer. I got it back together tonight, fired it up, and started on the second crank! Ran smooth, after I warmed it up I retorqued the bolts and all seem OK. So off to Tipton in the morning.... I guess in a few hours

And FYI, from memory... the issue with the length is not that it would "bottom out" as all of the holes go into cooling cavities, rather the extra length can attract corrosion and cause issues when removing at some point down the road.
