300 utility

300 utility at auction this Sunday.

If purchased plan on putting our backhoe on it.

What to look for? And opinions wanted.

I have a friend who has one and it doesn't have power steering and he finally took his loader off because it was a beast to turn but the backhoe should lighten the front end up...instant power steering

Preview. Snow covered. 1716 hours on the meter. Rear rubber 30% - 35%. Alternator, new battery. 3-point with grader blade. Some dash knobs broken/missing. Sheet metal - original paint - not badly dinged up. Steering sector - lot of play. Didn't hear run but had obviously been driven into the tractor line up.

It will take some fixing. Told son not to bid over $1500- for it.

I went to an auction Nov. 2 where a 300 sold for $325, and an 350 went for $350. The 350 had an IH loader on it. Both looked in decent shape for their age, but neither ran. It appeared they had the 300 running for at least a short while, as the manifold had some bright orange rust on it like it had ran and got the manifold warmed up some. Sediment bowl had what looked like fresh gas in it. Tires were decent too. We assumed that they had it running and sucked dirt in the carb., and didn't want to get into it that much for the auction.

Still about half kicking myself for not jumping in, but pretty well spent the mad money limit on a Cub LoBoy w/Fast Hitch and 4 FH implements and a set of rear wheel weights. I've got 3 tractors as projects to get to before I even get to the Cub. let alone anything else so let it slide. It was definitely bargain day at that sale.

Tractor started at auction. Hours later, temperature had dropped to below freezing. When we went to load on trailer, didn't start. Heet in gas tank, took battery home and charged up. Yesterday, Wednesday, 55 degrees, tractor started and drove on the trailer. Tractor is in the shop.

Initial close-up inspection. Needs serviced, complete tune up. Tractor hadn't been operated in some time. Some farmer fixes to be fixed. Electrical wiring, under sized at alternator battery terminal. Insulation missing on other electrical wiring. Alternator is very old with external regulator, to be replace with on hand single wire alternator. Fan and alternator belts shot. Ballast resistor soldered to connecting wires, corrosion.

Nothing seriously wrong with the tractor. Other than the tune up and service supplies, perhaps an additional $100- in parts.

Got some pics?
No. my cell phone doesn't take good pictures. El cheapo. Basically, I use as a desk phone. Son is on his way to acreage. Will phone and see if he can take photos.

Edit: Son said he would take photos. Son is at the shop testing out his new diesel fuel space heater. I just got back from dentist. Two teeth pulled in preparation for back surgery. Have spine bone spurs sticking into the spinal column.

4 days to remove set screw on the belt pulley width adjustment.
Tractor has power steering.
Fixing some farmer fixes. Replacing lost bolts. Lube and service.

Early Delco with external regulator.

Purchased a WD Allis that had that set up. Bad regulator. A replacement would have cost more than a single wire Delco. I went with the single wire alternator. That regulator is still available, $85-- - I only checked one source.

Swapped that alternator for a single wire Delco from a WD Allis I'm parting out.

Eugene, can you take a picture of the dash area? The PO stripped everything. I do not know the arrangement of the instruments or the parts on the lower dash. Where does the water temp connect to the water jacket? Thank you

It will probably be this weekend before I can get photos of the dash and trace the water temp location.

Upper dash, left to right: Temp, charge, oil gauges.
Lower dash, left to right: Choke, cigarette lighter, fuse holder, light switch, ignition/starter switch.
Tach is left of steering wheel.

If you haven't discovered it yet, penetrate made from a 50/50 mix of Acetone & ATF works great for rusty stuck bolts/set screws like that. I use a small dish detergent bottle with snap lid to prevent the Acetone from evaporating. Giving it a little shot the day before helps to let it soak in. Works better than Kroil, I used that for years before discovering this.
