well i decided to move this from my intro(new guy in VA) thread to its own project thread. here is the link to the photo album. i will try and update this as much as possible. i only have 4 weeks before i go back to college and still have to buy $300 in text books so i will have to figure out a way to get some $$ for gaskets to put the motor back togeather. if you are just tuneing in you can go to the other thread to play catch up

Keep an eye out for a 193 plow to make use of that depth control lever. Or you could sell it to get some money for the engine parts. Same with the belt pulley.

looks like part of the swinging drawbar rigged up on the cultivator to pull a trailer. keep your eyes out fo the rest of it as well.

well what would said belt pully go for? i would be intrested in trading for a hood/tank, lights, grill, woods 42 belly mower :{_}: or the belt pully to run a #22 mower off the pto. as far as the plow the old guy had one, wants $100 for it but it does not have any of the lifting chains or cutter, deal or no? anyway i also need a rear rim

thanks
Ian

alright did not get much done tonight. i have the carb and the head in the parts washer soaking all the crud off. took a wire brush and carb cleaner and got all the carbon off the valves and pistons. now for the questions.

#1 i took the 2 bolts out that hold the cultivators in on the front but i still cant get them to budge, any ideas?

#2 i have looked around but cant see any discription on how to take the valve springs out so i can lap the valves ect.

#3 any tricks on how to unstick the choke butterfly?

here is a pic of the cleaner valves/pistons

I have VERY little knowledge about Cultivators, so I will let someone who actually knows what they are talking about answer your question on that. As to the valves, go to your local farm store and get a valve spring compressor for small engines. They work well for the Cub as they can reach from the valve down to the spring. When you compress the valve spring, there are two keepers on the bottom of the valve stem. Remove these CAREFULLY so they don't drop into the oil pan... Better yet, put a rag over the holes leading to the oil pan to keep the keepers from getting in there. Once the keeper is removed from the end of the valve, the spring will release and the valve can be removed from the head or lapped in place.

As to the Choke Butterfly, once the gunk is off of the carb, it should turn pretty readily The shaft is pretty much just a press fit. You may also find that the choke lever is loose on the shaft... Don't throw the shaft away...it is NOT included in the carb rebuild kit... Don McCombs did a GREAT job of modifying my lever so that it once again gripped the shaft... worked like a charm. One other thing to be careful of is the spring under the choke lever. Try not to break that one... The replacements are not very good...

Good luck...I just KNOW that when you free up those valves, this tractor is gonna RUN!!!

Look at this page:

Remove everything except for item 9, which I assume you have done and therefor is your problem. Spray plenty amount of penetrant (kroil, pb blaster) on both ends of the frame and the holes where the bolts were. Do this for a couple days.
Place a 2x4 on the end of the frame (right side) and drive towards the left side of the tractor. Don't hit it without the 2x4, it may mushroom the end (inspect before you start to make sure previous owner hasn't already done this) and get wedged in the casting.
Little bit at a time, penetrant and patience.
Hope this helps.

well i did not get much done motor wise tonight, did not get by my friends house to get the spring compressor till later in the night. while i was waiting for him to get off work i threw some sand in the blaster and did a sample section on the tank/hood. got it down to bear metal with ease....but i need a bigger compressor. went by TSC on the way to get the compressor and got some of their "restoration" series of rattle can paint. primed and painted one coat and it looks pretty good i wanted to do the sample section to see if i needed to get sandable/filler primer to take out the rust pits. after 2 coats it looks good to me. now to finish the rest of the hood and finish the patch pannel. mabye ill have more luck getting more motor work done tommarow.

and as always here are more pictures.

P.S if anyone is intrested in the rear pully, i could really use the $$ to get a new radiator :{_}:

It is a small world.

well im board at work, wishing i was at home working on the cub :( but i did update my profile. i hope that my 3 john deeres in the signature do not offend anyone. i just love all old tractors, green, red, orange, blue whatever! but i will say the first one i bougt was the Super A so im a little more inclined to the red :big afro:

well finnaly bit the bullett and started on the valves, as of now i have 2 done. the 3rd is not seating right and might need to be replaced(are TM's valves already at the right pitch?) the 4th is one of the stuck valves that worked its way back down in the seat, i got the keepers off but still cant get it out. any ideas? to still get some work done and keep my hair i decided to start cleaning and painting the block and ect. when i get more of it painted ill post pics tommarow. i need to get on a roll because my friend and i want to plant a winter garden, and by god i want to use this cub! :D

Don't worry about having other tractors,I like them aswell. My grandad used FARMALL but bought a '44 B JD around 1960 that I still have. I would not get rid of it for anything. If we don't save the old ironthey will be as rare as steam engines.Russ
