Pulled a sticky valve with the worst looking seat. Took a wire brush on a cordless drill to clean it up. Looks to me like this will need seats put in.

that's pretty bad, hope there is enough good metal left to put a seat in it, the deck of the block looks pretty nasty also, that will probably need to be shaved also so the head gasket will seal

It would help matters but on the ole Cub the manifold is below the head surface and any water coming in through the exhaust would go with the gravity and go into the block.

I'm thinking about using a different block that we already put hardened seats in. I believe this block was bored .040 over and just needs to be honed. We have the pistons and gaskets in hand so not much to buy at this time. This engine was for another cub project that needs more work. I figure I can use this spare engine until I can get seats installed in the original and then just swap them out.

After a year of not looking at this tractor We started to swap parts from the old welded final drive to the good casting. OK we'll see you next year. :mrgreen:

Last year was a really busy with other projects that took priority. Hope to spend more time on tractor projects this year.

I demounted a rear tire on the rusted out rim. Now I need to heat the nut's on the wheel center and see if they will come loose.
