We just acquired this 1947 Cub. We believe the hood has been repainted at least once since the serial number indicates it's a Circle Cub yet it does not have the Circle Cub decals. We haven't decided yet what we are going to do with it (my oldest son who is 8 fell in love with it so I had to get it for him). We are either going to clean it up and repair what needs repaired or we are going to do a complete restoration. For now, however, we are just looking for information and helpful hints and tips. This is our first antique tractor so bare with us. Here is a profile picture of it.

The first thing we need to work out is what is supposed to be in the dash. I know an ammeter went in the left side of the dash because the previous owner took it out and used it on one of his other Farmall. However, he didn't know what went in the right side. Any help would be appreciated. Here is a picture of the dash.

On a 47, the ammeter would have been the only gauge. The right side would have had a blank that could be knocked out for installing whatever was wanted. on all 3 of my cubs (47, 48, 49) I have installed an oil pressure gauge in the hole.

Here is a page from the 1947 Cub owner's manual showing the dash. There is no instrument on the right side, to the right of the ammeter in the pic.
I have seen pics on here of the early dashes, the unused hole had a knockout metal plate in behind it, same sheet metal as the dash, I think, like John said.
Someone has removed the plate on yours evidently.

Just to keep everything documented in this thread I'm including something else I asked about in abother thread.
Here is a picture of the external ignition coil. Apparently this was installed later as the picture also shows it originally had a magneto. Without a functional magneto I'm not able to crank start it without a fully charged battery.

It's been some time since I updated this thread. To date, we bought a replacement amp meter from the bay for $14.99 and installed it in the dash but have not connected it to the electrical system yet as the tractor could use rewiring. So, we will tackle that sometime this winter.
The next thing we tackled this summer was the right rear wheel. The rim was rotted real bad from neglect and leaking calcium. 
The wheel was rusted to the axle. We beat on it for weeks and finally just cut the darn thing off. 
We purchased a new rim from TM Tractor Parts, a used center from JP Tractor Salvage, and a new inner-tube from the bay.

Took off the front wheel and noticed a large crack in the tube that holds the steering knuckle (at least I think that's the correct part name).
After Halloween we will take the tube off and repair it. I'm not sure if my welding skills are up to if but I will give it a try. If it doesn't work I'll get a friend to weld it. He knows what he is doing. :lol:
We took off the wheel weight and discovered serious pitting in the wheel where dirt, grass and other gunk had been stuck between the weight and wheel from probably 70 years. After wire-wheeling it and treating it with naval jelly it looked like this.
Finally we decided we liked the look of the silver/grey outer rim even though the color scheme is not correct.
Hopefully we will get the weight on it tonight and install it on the tractor.

Do you know that the magneto is bad, or does it just need a new coil? The old original type coils are available for $80-$100 and fairly simple to replace. I'm a novice mechanic and have replaced mine twice. I guess I like the idea of being able to crank start it when the battery is dead.

There is some forum members who are specialists with the magneto. You could place a "Wanted" notice on the VINE, Classified. Another option is to take it to a CUBFEST where someone will be able to help you. It requires special tools to disassemble and overhaul.
