Hello Everyone,

Wondering where you guys get engine parts for a F12? I am getting motivated to work on another tractor soon, as the current project is about finished up.
So we got this old tractor 20 plus years ago, at a farm sale. One of the really cool things about this tractor is that it has factory fenders on it.
Apparently the previous owner had done what Dad called a DuPont Overhaul to it, meaning he painted it added new decals.

It is a great old tractor, but has never really been very dependable. Its hard to start, and the engine smokes, is low on compression, and it has one cylinder that only has about 25 30 lbs of compression.
From what we could tell, it has a burnt exhaust valve because oil added to the cylinder did not help, and it pops through the exhaust when it runs.
So its been sitting in the shed, most of the time we owned it because of these issues.
I would like to tear into it, and see what can be done. Probably will need exhaust valves, or at least one, and a set of gaskets, and some rings, and main and rob bearing. My hope is, since it carries good oil pressure that the crank will be ok, and the engine can be refreshed with out removing it from the tractor. Its a guess until I get it apart?

So any way, sorry for the long post. Where is the best place to get these parts? Also is there a source for diaphragms for the fuel pump?
As long as its sat, I would be that the pump will leak.

Determine and make a list of needed parts. Price and record the parts from a number of suppliers including local auto parts stores.

You will probably find that there is a considerable difference in price for the same identical item/part.

Edit. I'm currently using my son's Amazon Prime for some/most items.
 
I haven't dug into my F-14 yet, so I can't say much about sourcing parts (other than tires).

What I can say though, I have a bearing distributor nearby (Bearings Inc - South) and have used them quite often for bearings, oil seals, speedy sleeves and bushings and they are priced right too. They can usually find what I am looking for. Like Eugene said, check your local suppliers. Sometimes a big difference in price from a local supplier vs dealer price, sometimes I've seen 3-4 times markup and I have occasionally seen the opposite!

I am also fortunate to have some machining equipment available at work and have made or modified some parts there too.

For the most part, I shy away from Amazon and Ebay because you really don't know what you will end up with, unless it is a good used part. This really could go for any Internet website. I have had some decent luck with local salvage yard, NAPA, Steiner and my local Case/IH dealer when necessary. The most important thing is to do your research and do like what you did, ask around.

I listed Amazon Prime because I'm finding that resourcing parts locally is a problem. My guess, local resources and their distribution centers are not getting shipments of ordered parts.

Story. Local hardware store to pick up a cartridge for the Delta kitchen faucet. Out of stock. The local hardware store has been waiting two months for their order, and their supplier said the part was back ordered. Did find the part on Amazon and it was delivered in two days.
 
You are 100% correct about the difficulties of finding stuff as of the last year or so. A couple of the Mom and Pop places that I frequented in the past have closed up shop, can't get products in the store or are have staffing issues. The big box stores only carry what sells and most times they don't have what you are looking for anyhow. Amazon Prime has filled that void and I am thankful for that. Just some of the stuff, in my opinion, is sketchy and falls into that gray area.

I was at Farm & Fleet to get an oil filter for my 400 a while ago and couldn't find it. An employee told me they stopped carrying them. Seemed odd, but it might be a product of the same supply issue as well.
 
Thank you all for the help. I sat down and did some digging last night after I came in from the shop.
It looks like there are more engine parts available that I thought.

I even found a complete fuel pump rebuild kit. To bad it was 1/4 of what the tractor cost us 20 some years ago.

One of these days, hopefully soon I will start taking this thing apart and see what it actually needs.
