193 plow question

After I secure a rear rock shaft and rod I plan to mount my plow to my tractor. My question is about the leveling adjuster. I see from the parts diagram it shows a large spring. Once a position is obtained on the quadrant does the plow float on the spring giving it a little movement or is the plow steady and unmovable? I have seen videos of people who chained up the plow without the leveler. That would keep it from going any deeper but would have no effect on any upward movement. I understand it calls for the drawbar to be free floating so you can make depth adjustment but once you obtain the depth you want does drawbar still float a bit because of spring or could it be a solid position with no movement? Ideally the leveler should be installed and used like intended but until a leveler becomes available I am looking at options to still use the plow without destructing the tractor or the plow. Thanks for any thoughts and advice.
 
For depth adjustment, angle of plow is changed at the front up or down. Raising and lowering with the rear rockshaft does not change the angle at the critical point, in the ground. And depth needs adjusted at least twice when plowing. When you begin, a depth adjuster is placed in lowest notch. Then on next pass it’s adjusted to desired depth. How are you going to use drawbar in fixed position and achieve depth you want? Can you maybe get by with raisin and lifting rear rockshaft? Maybe you could muck along like that with drawbar somehow stationary but lower than a fixed reverse bar. I don’t see any harm in trying. If you’re determined to make this happen and if it were me, I’d find a mule drawn plow, hook it to drawbar, and get someone to handle the plow while it’s pulled. But even then, must have hitch component for adjusting the depth at the plow

Thank you for responding. I have not considered you have to make two depth adjustments. I’m trying to comprehend if the plow actually is fixed or slightly movable because it rides on spring tension once your depth is set. Actually what I was thinking without the original depth adjuster on the tractor was attach drawbar backwards like it is supposed to be. Remove bolts and let drawbar rock on pin as it’s supposed too. Lower drawbar to a depth desirable to plow and cut a piece of metal to attach like the dog bone but to a fixed position. Unlike the adjuster. It would be solid and not movable. While typing this it come to my mind that the leveler spring might play a role in allowing the plow to be picked up and lowered at the end of your rows.

Soil conditions change, often dramatically, within the field being plowed; therefore, you need to be able to respond to those changing conditions quickly. When plowing no matter whether manual or hydraulic the lifting mechanism has only two functions, lift the plow out of the ground or lower it to plow. For those new to plowing, I suggest getting up close and personal with owners manual for the version of plow that you have.

Thank you. I understand about the lifting mechanism only real function, raise and lower. What do you think the functions of the spring on the leveler is? If a leveler is installed and a depth is set in a notch, could a person stand on the drawbar and jump up and down and any movement occur in the drawbar or would it be fixed? I am new to plowing with a moldboard plow for sure. I have read the manual about the 193 and adjustments. If all the right equipment is installed then no excuse for not having all the information needed to plow right. I’m just thinking outside the box since currently I do not have all the right equipment. I often attempt to retrofit some things and either improve or make things worse afterwards. I have made some pretty good adjustments on some things though. Ultimately I hope to get all the right equipment but until then just thinking outside the box. I made my living as a mechanic and metal fabricating and making special tools and other projects were common place.

Not sure what you mean by leveler. That spring is a lift assist spring. Tension can be adjusted to assist with lifting implements
Also, the plow does not ride on spring tension when the depth is set. The only function that spring has when you are plowing is to assist in lifting the plow at the end of a furrow.

Thank you, that makes sense. My bad about the name leveler. Not sure why I was saying that. Depth adjuster would have made more sense. Lift assist spring, thank you. Then it’s only function is helping you move the lever up and down and moving the drawbar. Once you set the lever in a notch then it all becomes rigid and basically a fixed plowing position of the drawbar and the drawbar does not move while plowing.
 
Thanks for posting the image. I have been baffled since the start of this thread as to what you were referring to as a spring on the depth adjuster. The spring is part of the master lift assembly used on tractors without Touch-Control. If you have a hydraulic system, you usually will not even have that spring. As Thomas said, it is an assist spring for manually lifting implements. It has no connection to the depth control mechanisms, including the reversed drawbar. Adjustment of the position of the drawbar is handled by a separate lever mounted near the right fender.
 
I think I have been looking at this the wrong way. I thought the spring was on the depth adjusting lever. I now see that is on the manual lift mechanism in place of the Hydralic lift. So the depth adjuster on yhe right side has no spring at all. I am sorry for all the confusion.
 
Correct, the depth adjuster is all solid linkage and no springs. The manual lift or hydraulics are used only to lower the plow into operating position on/in the ground and lift the plow out of the ground. They lift via a chain that should be slack when plowing, not with tension that would limit the plow depth.

After looking at all this, it’s disturbing to me with all the wrong terminology I used and wrong parts to boot. I have wasted people’s time and sorry about that! I know in theory what I’m thinking about but got very confused. Simply put I’m trying to determine once I lower my plow with the touch control to the ground and it’s all mounted correctly but I have no depth control lever, could I push down the front of the drawbar to a position that is suitable to plow and make a brace out of metal to secure the bar to that fixed position.

I suppose you could do it but I stand by my comments above. Operationally, you are going to be sorely disappointed and extremely frustrated. "...a position that is suitable to plow" is going to change, you need a complete depth adjusting lever assembly.

Not sure why you have the picture of the Master Control Lever, or manual lift lever, if you have Touch Control.
You don't use the manual lift lever, to the left of if the seat, if the Cub has Touch Control.

There isn't a picture of the complete Depth Adjusting Lever, to the right of the seat, in the Cub 193 Plow owner's manual, except for the parts picture. The depth control lever is needed to use the plow.

The lever bolts onto the right final drive.
It controls the height of the drawbar, and the height of the front of the plow beam.

Not sure why you have the picture of the Master Control Lever, or manual lift lever, if you have Touch Control.
You don't use the manual lift lever, to the left of if the seat, if the Cub has Touch Control.

I got the master lever confused with the depth lever just glancing at a diagram. I fully understand the functions of both but just got confused. Yes I have touch control, glad of that. All the manuals are very helpful. It was all a big foul up.

Don't worry about that. It is pretty routine for new Cub owners (or even old Cub owners with new implements) to have trouble sorting out how a mounted implement is properly attached and operated. That is one of the problems that we run into all the time. We are here to help.
