Are these the proper locations to put in the fluid. Also, would 90W Gear oil be satisfactory and if not, what is the preferred fluid to put in.

Thanks!

Download and follow the info in this service manual. It should have all the information that you need plus a lot more.

Thank you again. I was just wondering if this was the right location, i had looked in the operator's manual and it was kind of generic however it did show what type of fluid to put in (HY-Tran) but was wondering if something else could be used safely.

Use only HY-tran or equivalent. Reason, the transmission/differential case is the reservoir for the hydraulic system

Oooooooh, thank you... that makes perfect sense. But those are the Inputs for the Hy-Tran right?

The two plugs in the pictures are for the finals . The plug for the trans is on the rear diff cover between the plugs in the pictures .

The service manual Section 9 above has a lube section starting on page 187. You can download the lubrication info for a 154 which will be very similar by selecting the Operator's Manual R-1, 10-68 from the Manuals tab at Quick links above and get the entire lubrication section on pages 41-44. The lubrication location point guide looks like this: 154 lube guide.jpg
Click on the picture makes it larger. There's also the 154 Owner's Manual available which contains more detailed information.

Eugene is correct on this. The previous owners of our 154 used ATF and it leaked out. The reason I know this is when I started to repair the tractor last year and I was going to flush the fluids in the main gearbox... it looked empty from the filler hole! The residual fluid in the hydraulic filter when I changed it was red, (it's supposed to be clear!).

It is not terribly hard to change the fluid in the axles, remove the tires and undo the bolts on the housings and pray the gaskets don't rip.

Napa sells the equivalent Hy-Tran and it's worked great so far.

I do hope you're right! The fluid in the axles was clear when I changed it though, and I know that those haven't been flushed in about 30 years or more.

I've checked the fluid numerous times in the main case and the fluid level hasn't changed. I suspected it was ATF because it may have leaked out.

I was itching to put heavier 85+ wt. in the finals. I topped it with Hy-tran or equivalent. I heard gear noise but it was normal gear noise when the engine isn't loud at all. When I read a few things here, it became more clear. The bearings are sealed or open. There are seals but over time, they leak. So the 85-120 oil would leak back into the entire transmission and hydraulics.

There is a possible adjustment to bearings. Without adjustment the gears don't mesh correctly. Without the proper mesh, the tractor is toast or sold eventually. This is going on. It is too bad sometimes how machines work to the very end ..and break. Coulda shoulda checked bearing run out. Didn't. Will always be a new tractor. Isn't the same.
