174 runner planter

hello , I have a question about my 174-runner planter! when i set it up to plant my corn I put the cub on 2x4x8 's, then I lowered the planter until the runner touched the garage floor, so that put my depth at 1.5", I was going through one of my corn fields i noticed quite a bit of corn was not in the ground. should i be using the furrowing shovel on the tool bar in front of the runner? or shouldn't that matter? I went back through the field and spot planted with my earthway planter, that was a chore. any ideas would be appreciated.

the runner should cut the furrow ok, make sure its kinda sharp, , and it can be adjusted to dig deeper, try a little more pressure with the tough control,
just dig with it after adjustment, no seed until you get it right
 
Are you depending on the touch control for getting the right depth? Unclear how you’ve set the depth.
Silly question I suppose, but ground is tilled?
 
I set the depth with the touch control, and yes the field was tilled.

I was going to ask the same thing, was this loosely worked soil prior to planting? These things are not "no till" planters.
 
There is an adjustment for the height of the packer wheel. It may be limiting the runner depth. The pitch of your universal mounting frames could have the same effect as they determine the pitch of the planter frame.

I believe that the pressure rod is on, i never did any adjustments to that rod, I'm not sure of what the tension should be set at

Are those adjustments in the manual? When I set the depth with the touch control, it seemed the runner was what touched the floor, but I will have to double check that,after I remove the cultivators and put it back on.
I also have the covering blade in front of the packer wheel.

I checked the length of my push rods, and the manual says they should be 23 1/4 " long. from the center of the eyes.
mine are set at 22". so later this morning I will make the adjustment to the correct length and tighten up the tension springs.
I will start there.

After adjusting pressure rods, there is an adjustment on each side, large nut behind the bracket where the pins are on each side. Have to loosen nut and take pin out to adjust. Can adjust so they are level with one another.
Also, the 174 ‘floats’ with the pressure rod keeping the runner in contact with ground. That’s why I asked about the depth adjustment you did. Not sure that 1.5” is enough. I’ve never done that. Depth of the seeds happens mainly by how much soil gets thrown on them by the covering blade and wheel and how deep sword goes

my seed said to plant at 1" deep, so that's why i put the cub up on 2x4's at 1.5" but obviously that is not planting deep enough, I plant a couple of acres.

I would suggest running the belly runner with the chain off the planer drive down a "practice" row, and adjust it that way. It could be any number of things keeping it from going deep enough. The pressure rod, runner pivot hole, etc. can make it change.
