154 engine surging

I originally thought it was an intermittent fuel flow problem. However I discovered after setting outside over night that it ran really poorly at first (worse under load) then gradually improved over the next 10-20 min as it warmed up. This repeated after setting out a second night. Hooked a timing light up to one of the plug wires and it looks whenever it misses/surges there's no spark (light doesn't flash) I've put my hand on the plug wires when it was running badly to feel if there is any leakage and couldn't feel any. There was a tune up before mowing season with new cap, rotor, points and condenser. I plan to replace the plug wires as they are old but don't think this is the problem. To recap - runs poorly under at load after setting all night. After 15 min or so runs good with only an occasional hick up. Seems like it may be moisture related. Thoughts?

I can confirm that from my experience the C60 engine firing system does not like moisture. I had an incident where the tractor was outdoors and exposed in a rain shower and would not start. I towed it under a shed and the next day it started up with no intervention and no problem. Just a thought: you could try spraying inside the distributor cap/points area prior to the first startup with a moisture displacer like WD40 and see if it makes any difference. Inexpensive, quick check and it might enlighten the subject. JMHO Stan

Worth a try. I've had it for 30+ years and its never done anything like this

Thanks, you put me on the right track. Removed the distributor cap and about 3 Tablespoonfuls of oil ran out. Have new O-ring for the shaft and some gasketsordered.

Oil in the distributor housing is probably coming from a bad seal on the shaft that drives the dist. like on a FCub/LoBoy. You can search the farmall cub forum for some help on the subject or Download a copy of GSS 1012 battery ignition and magneto service and repairs from the Resources link at the top of this page. It will probably have some info since the engines are the same as the Number Series LoBoy. Pay particular attention to the timing before starting work and don't move the C/S so as to not change the timing in any way when you put it back together. Good Luck! Stan
