12 Volt to 6 Volt

Hello, everybody! The first serious project I need to undertake for my 1953 Cub is to complete its conversion to 12 Volt. It already has the 12 volt battery and coil. I need to get a ballast for the coil and an alternator.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good alternator that will fit nicely under the Cub hood and not cost a fortune? Also what should I do for the ballast, and where and how should I mount it? Any thoughts and ideas are welcome.

If your coil is internal resistor equipped you do not need a ballast resistor. As for the alternator, I would (and have) used a self exciting, internal regulated one wire type like the mini Denso. JMHO Stan
EDIT: The pic is from several years ago, they are more expensive now.

I think I read on the side of the coil “use with external resister” so, yes you need a ballast resister. You can pick one up at most any parts store. Just ask for one a 60’s Chrysler vehicle of any model. As for the alternator, I’m with Stan on the Mini Denso. I’ve installed quite a few of them and they have been great. You’ll Need to do a little light fab for the mounting brackets but not difficult.
