I have an H and have the option of putting either a 6volt or 12 volt gen on. I do not have a spare battery for either voltages at this time. So which way would be the way to go. lights not working at this time either. do i go back original or switch to 12 volt. all my other farmalls are still 6 volt. Will not be using this tractor till i do some more work to it. I know it is just up to me which route i go just wondering what yall would do.
 
I get that question asked by a few folks as well. My reply is normally: It depends on what you intend to do with the tractor :!:

If you are planning on restoring it back to orignal, I'd leave well enough alone.

If you plan on using it quite a bit, and want to rely on it, I'd go ahead and switch it if cost is no problem to you. The one thing about having it set up for 12 volts is that if the battery is dead, or the tractor dies out somewhere where you are not close to an AC outlet, you can always jump it with a normal vehicle battery.

Just no 2 cents worth.
 
It depends on your preference, if everything is good, but you just need a battery, I would stay with the 6 volts, unless you need to use it when it is extremley cold. They will still start below zero if everything is in good shape, but crank pretty slow. If you are going to need a generator, etc. and don't really care aobut correctnes, I would look into a 12 volt alternator setup. That can be done fairly reasonable.
 
Actually i already have the generators and a 1 wire alt i can use. this was set up on 12 volt when i bought it, well kinda ,they didn't do a very good job. So i have the oportunity to re do it. Like everything else i seem to buy i get the re do.
 
I have 3 IH tractors,newest is a 1950 H.All have 6 volt battries.I use the hand cranks to start them.I like 6 volt and will keep them that way.Ketcham
 
If I had to rebuild the generator, I would go 12v. My friend who bought my SM did this. He rebuilt the original generator to 12v. My 100 is 6v and started perfectly when it was 5 below -0-, plus charges like a bandit. I won't do it unless a rebuild on the charging system is in order.

I would go 12v if a tractor you will use, more reliable and versatile. 6v if you desire to maintain originality.
