107 questions

I may be going to look at a 107 that I was told has a good deck but needs the connecting rod and seat. Price sounds right, but the only riding mower I have any experience with was a Simplicity Landlord. What should I look at close if I go? No idea what the strong or weak points are. Thanks. John

Needing a connecting rod and a seat, the asking price for the 107 would have to be very very cheap. Cheap, as in you can have it for hauling it off.

Older running Cub Cadets with mower deck do not bring a lot at local auctions. You would be better off purchasing a running CC.

Just my opinion.

Not a great demand around here for older cub cadets either. They are great machines and interesting to mess with, but as Eugene says can't get much out of them. I have bought 4 non-runners from 130 to 200. Rebuilt the motor in one. Just hobby stuff. Now if I buy a non runner I would be looking at scrap price. But if you want to get one I'd look for one running. You can still get parts but they are getting old and things do break and wear out. I do enjoy visiting with other collectors and users and kinda like cubs, you can't just have one!

Hah, I was expecting to see a list of one hundred and seven questions. Good luck with your potential project.

If it needs a connecting rod, then you can plan on putting an engine in it. Honestly, even if the rest of the tractor is in perfect condition, needing nothing, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it, unless you need the tractor or parts of it for another one. K series engines are bad about being tough to rebuild if the connecting rod has broken, and I'd say that you've got less than 50% chance that it will keep running even if you do a full engine rebuild. The K series engines are really bad about the rod breaking then part of the rod on the crank shaft coming back up and breaking off the bottom of the cylinder skirt in the block. Once that happens, it can't be rebuilt, and unfortunately, unless you know what it 's supposed to look like inside the block, you'll never know that the piece of the block is broken or damaged.

Started a post on doubts about the engine. Then read Gitractorman's post.

I own 4 narrow framed Cub Cadets. If I needed parts I might consider purchasing the 107. One or two items from a parts Cadet are frequently worth more than the purchase price.

WHOA! Stop the blasting on the Kohler K-Series!

You're blasting an Iron Line Kohler?

With aluminum connecting rods?

What kind of IH Cub Cadet mechanics are you?

Shame on you, seriously!!

Look, the truth be told is this from experience. The engines can be rebuilt for as little as $150. if you can do the work yourself. Good running, used replacement engines can be purchased for as little as 2-300.

Holy smokes, and to read there is not a lot of use out of one of the best dam garden tractors ever produced is another blood boiler!

Good grief, if the price is right like you claim, get the IH Cub Cadet 107!

I would also suggest a lower price because a 107 model is a hydrostatic drive. With out running operation, its tuff to determine what condition the drive unit is in.

I just rebuilt a Kohler K241A out of a model 100, had the work farmed out. Now, that same engine is good for another 45 years or so!

Oh yea,.. bigger tractors are usually bigger problems, and bigger targets!

I'm by no way taking the fun from the forum!

By the way, I see your in W.Farmington! How neat! I'm here in Newbury!

IH Cub Cadets are hot and heavy in this region. So, there is not going to be a problem with parts!

Voltage Regulator,
I'm not disagreeing with you, and I've rebuilt plenty of Kohler engines, and I agree that the K-series, single cylinder Kohler engine is one of the most durable engines I've ever seen. However, having worked on more than I can count, if an engine has been run to the point where the connecting rod breaks, everything I stated earlier is absolutely true! 9 times out of 10, when the rod breaks in half, the half attached to the crankshaft comes back up and breaks off the bottom of the cylinder skirt that protrudes down into the crank case. This engine is still rebuildable, and I've even rebuilt them myself, having the block bored, oversized new piston and rings, turn the crank, and they run beautifully. However, I'd say there's less than 50% of the engines in this condition, that will hold up under serious use, and I'd say that this condition is the reason for about 75% of the Kohler engines that blow up a second time. You're absolutely correct about rebuilding one for $150, and I'd say that this is the reason that the other 25% of rebuilt engines blow up a second time. Any idiot that can turn wrenches or kids working in their dads garage, can rebuild a Kohler engine. Trust me, I've seen it first hand.

I had a Cub Cadet 109 in my garage a few years ago that the guy just couldn't figure out what was wrong. The guy bought all the parts and paid some kid $100 to rebuild the engine. When he got it back the engine just raced and almost blew up the first time he started it. I opened it up and the kid had left out the governor control rod..... just a simple little part that's absolutely necessary!!!!!

I've also owned Cub Cadets that are 40+ years old and still running on the original engine, just using a slight bit of oil, and have plenty of power. Those tractors will likely run forever if you keep oil in them!

Anyway, like I said, if the connecting rod broke, the tractor was abused. Plan on putting a new engine in it!

gitractorman, Most occasions I replace the engine before she gives. Its my experience when the rings start to go, the piston likes to get sloppy, and the cylinder block becomes like the "hour glass" shape.

Now I'm ready to see inside my k181 I have with a free spinning crank!

I'd rather see this 107 get saved from the junk man's crusher. These tractors are really well built. You old timer's had it good. Today's stuff is a whole new ball game!

Thanks for all your replies. I haven't heard back with a phone no. from a friend who found this, so it may be gone. A CC is on my want list, not gotta have list, so I'll be patient. It's surprising what you can find if you wait. John

Hello there! My real name is John! I just love IH products!

Hey, last Saturday my wife and I were headed to Grove City for some shopping. I took rout 422 south, about a mile or more past the Highway Patrol Barracks, on the right side before the 5/82 by-pass is a really nice 154 lo-boy with I'd say a 60" haban mower deck!!!!

It's for sale!!!

Just an fyi because its almost in your back yard!

Over here on 168 near Georgia Rd was a nice red 125, a '59 Bolens, and an old Toro for sale too! The Cadet has 44" deck! Think that's around 400.

That little chunk that breaks off the bottom of cyl.is not a problem I had it bored, new every thing motor been running 2 years an no problem (happy camper)
