Some of you may remember back in 2022 that I purchased a FH coupling beam and a pair of peg tooth harrow sections from Charles McComb. We both had the idea of making a LF-4 Peg Tooth Harrow, and this was a good start !
I had searched Craig’s list and FB Marketplace for years in the hope of finding one but realized time was passing by and I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to build one. Little did I know how hard that would be.
I have the IH parts diagram for one but there are NO measurements. So for a year I tried finding people who have one that I could get measurements; not just one measurement but measurements of everything ! So, finally I decided to drive the six hours to Half Century of Progress where I was able to take all the measurements needed: Thanks Daryl , they had a great display !
Now that I had lots of pictures and measurements I had to decide how to build it so I started with the two plates that hold the entire implement to the FH beam. That was the hardest part of the build, how do I take a large piece of angle iron and cut multiple angles across a bend ! That one went to a machine shop.
I built all the coupling parts first and fabricated one piece at a time and primed and painted it.
Next came the harrow sections, at first I was going to just paint them, but I didn’t like the wavy ends, I understand why they were like that but they didn’t look like the drawings. Decided on the hard route and cut them all apart, wired wheeled each piece and made new ends that were more correct to the drawing. Once painted they were laid out and assembled, a few extra holes were drilled.
Finally I put it all together except for the pegs, which I have but it’s easier to store without them; most likely I won’t use it anyway !
