hydraulic pump question

Postby coppersmythe » Fri May 06, 2022 6:39 pm

hello all from the sweltering deep south . 64* cub , she was strong as a bull , but little by little , the t/c became less and less "strong" . it got to the point that i had to rev up the engine to max rpm , and finally it just stopped working ( using it sparingly , over a 6-7 month period ) . fluid level was fine . finally had some free time yesterday , pulled the pump first ( but , expecting to have to do a complete rebuild of the t/c unit ) . pump came out , but no gear on the shaft . i looked inside the pump "hole" , there it was . needlenose pliers got it out , but no nut , "lock" washer, or key . my question is how did this happen , and where are the missing parts ? oil pan? i did switch out the broken pump with a known pump . cub is back to working . coppersmythe.........................................

Val, the parts are in the oil pan. No idea why it happened. You may find the lock washer was either missing or the tab broke off.

Thanks for the quick response. i was worried the missing parts might jam-up in the gears of the cam/crank ect. , though , i'm not curious enough to drop the oilpan! coppersmythe...............................

Try a flexible magnetic pickup through the drain hole.

Well, it soulds like a pump or touch control rebuild might not be needed now, that is a plus
