CUB Governor

Postby baldwindiesel » Sun Feb 20, 2022 8:09 pm

My governor isn't working, there isn't any return force on the carb side. The spring is good and functions when the throttle is advanced, but the engine will overspeed if I don't control it. Could the thrust bearings in the governor be the cause ?

I sent you a PM.

They have said on here that Cub governors seldom have problems inside them.

Before taking the governor apart, you should set the external linkage correctly.
It is adjusted at the yoke on the rod ahead of the carburetor.
The governor, and sometimes the throttle lever, won't work right unless the linkage is set correctly.
There is a procedure in the Cub and LoBoy service manual. :)

As Glen said it is almost never inside the governor. Check all of the linkages from the throttle to the carb and make sure they are free and move through the range. The lever arm that the spring is connected to needs to be free and not sticking or bound. If everything is free adjust the gov to carb linkage per the manual.

Have you split the cub recently? The throttle to governer linkage will go in both ways but it is only correct one way. If it is backward that can cause some hang ups.

If all of that checks out then pull the governor.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
