Oil pressure gauge

I finished going through my first Cub I got from front to back. Hooked up a drag harrow to pull around the farm paths and give a good strained workout like others suggest to do. I noticed at idle that the original oil pressure gauge only comes up a quarter way, and when dragging it goes to halfway. In the repairs, I didn't pay attention to the oil pickup screen like I do now on the others, and wasn't aware of priming the pump after oil change. It has run smoothly and compression checked out good. A bit concerned about the low pressure though. The 55 I got immediately pegs out as soon as it starts. Pull the pan and check the screen? Open to suggestions.

Hi,
The oil pressure you describe sounds about right, according to several years of Cub owner's and operator's manuals.
You didn't say what year Cub it is, I guess it is the 1948 your info says you have.

It sounds like your 1955 Cub has too much oil pressure, but if it goes down when it warms up, it is probably ok.

You could remove the oil pan and clean it and the oil intake screen, if you didn't.

You don't need to prime the oil pump if the oil gauge shows pressure.

Different gauges have different pressure ranges so without seeing what specific oil pressure gauges are on each tractor it's impossible to answer the question. Some gauges are 0-40 and some gauges are 0-75. Halfway on a 0-40 will appear low on a 0-75. Conversely halfway on a 0-75 will appear high on a 0-40. Post photos if you can.

She ended up being a hot mess, the more I started inspection when I got it home. Started with new radiator and bolster. Then rear engine seal during clutch and pressure plate. Ending with total rebuild of both finals and new tires all the way around.

What weight oil do you use? I run a Shell Rotella 15W40 oil. I was running a 10-30 oil until and a number of people here and Ron at TM tractors suggested it was too light. My oil pressure increased and blow-by decreased.

Hi,
The Cub and LoBoy service manual says that a Cub and LoBoy engine has 30 - 35 lbs of oil pressure at 1800 RPM. That is probably for a new engine.
You can see where that would be on the pic of the gauge with the numbers that I posted above.

What weight oil do you use? I run a Shell Rotella 15W40 oil. I was running a 10-30 oil until and a number of people here and Ron at TM tractors suggested it was too light. My oil pressure increased and blow-by decreased.

I run it in everything besides my daily drivers. It's Jaso rates for wet clutches so it makes a good ATV oil, it works well in mowers, your tractors , generators, and other stationary motors. Makes things simple by only having one oil for all those. I buy 2.5 gallons of 15w40 at the time and refill 1 gallon n jugs to fill the smaller things.
