Broke off bolt in rear pto seal
When I used my sickle bar mower I wasn’t real happy how the rear pulls bolts onto the rear pto housing. It did shear a bolt off and was curious if there is tool to try to back the bolt out.

Left drill bit and screw bolt extractor may work.

Re: Broke off bolt in rear pto seal
Depending on where the bolt sheared it may be easier to remove the pto or transmission cover and have enough sticking out to get vice grips on it or enough to weld a nut to if you have access to a welder

And if you don't have a small set of left hand drill bits with extractors, keep your eye out for a reasonably priced set. They are well worth it. Deceit set can be had for less than $20.00. Sometimes the left hand bit will back out the broken bolt without even using the extractor.

Many on here, and elsewhere, will discourage the use of extractors. If you break one of those off in the bolt, you are really in a bind.

I agree with Don. If your not comfortable with drilling and using an extractor. Don't use them. Using the extractor does take finesse.

Re: Broke off bolt in rear pto seal
Hi,
I'm not sure where the bolt is that you said broke.
The Cub 22 mower should work without breaking any bolts.
If you mean the drive pulley on the PTO broke the key through the shaft, it is supposed to have just a cotter key through the PTO shaft hole to keep the pulley from moving forward or back.
The pulley is supposed to have splines in it, so it can be tightened on the shaft.
Below are pics from TM Tractor of a Cub 22 mower pulley. If it is a LoBoy, they use a different pulley.
In the bottom right pic, the large hole is for a 3/8" bolt with a nut and lock washer, the bolt bends the pulley slightly to tighten it on the PTO shaft.
The shaft has to have good splines so the pulley will tighten on it.

Glen, I think he was talking about the bolts that hold the the PTO shaft bearing and seal to the rear of the tractor. A 3/8 ratchet can shear off one if your not careful.

A photo of the bolt in question should clear up the confusion.

Re: Broke off bolt in rear pto seal
I'm pretty sure he is talking about the three bolts where the bracket bolts on just below the PTO shaft. You can partly see the left one behind the pulley/belt in this picture (from TM).

A picture of the broken one so we could see what he is working with would probably help with useful suggestions.

They are right...I broke off an extractor on a 3/4" bolt on the front of my JD and I am screwed trying to get that out from the front. Pic would be great

I believe that if the bolt is broken off in cast iron then you should be able to have it burned out with an oxy/acet cutting torch. It should leave the threads intact.

Re: Broke off bolt in rear pto seal
The key to using the left hand bit or extractor is to use a good center punch and be dead center on the broken bolt- screw. Patience , Patience, and some good penetrating oil.

Re: Broke off bolt in rear pto seal
Mine was a little too deep to weld a bolt on to and too close to the gas tank. I will wait until I have the gas tank off and get at it from the other side of the bolster. I did learn a lesson though
