The brakes on Cubs are in areas between the transmission and the final drives. The brake areas should be dry.
Sometimes the oil seals are wornout and need replacing, if the trans oil is at the right level, and oil is leaking.

Below are listings for new seals at TM Tractor, if you want to look at the pics.
The two seals are different sizes.

This seal below goes in the transmission.

This seal below goes in the final drive, outboard of the brake drum. There are pics below on the page.

The seals on the right side may be wornout too.
The right side is more work to replace the seal in the trans, you need to remove the battery box and seat post, and loosen the platform so it will lift up at the rear, and remove the right side extension, after removing the final drive first.

If you are taking the welded final drive off, it would be a good time to find one that is not broken, and put a new seal and brake lining on it, and use it instead, if you are going to use the Cub much.
JP Tractor Salvage, at the bottom of the page, might have a used final drive casting if you want to buy one.

IH changed the brake style during 1953, at serial number 173601, so if your Cub is below that number, the brake should look like in Dale's post on page 3 of this post, if the final drives are the original style, sometimes people change them.
The two styles of final drive castings are different in the brake area.

I look on Steiner and really for the little there is in price difference, I will probably just order the complete brake unit. I looked at the two different rivet tools they have, and wondered if the tools that I have on hand wouldn’t do the job, so this go around I’ll look at the new complete brake bands then practice with my old ones so I’ll have a set of spares going forward.
