1951 Cub - New member

Postby Gulflex1 » Tue Jan 28, 2020 7:55 am

Just obtained a family Cub. My Grandfather was second owner of it for about 20 or more years, then my Father bought it from him and kept it for roughly 22 years. The end of the year, I obtained it and trying to do all the needed service work. I asked Dad when he last changed the oil or did any work to it. His comment was that it had some leaks and Charlie (a man down the road who worked on diesel trucks) repaired the leaks and changed the oil. Hmm, that was probably 18-20 years ago we then estimated. I have changed the oil and spark plugs on Saturday. I have a new wiring harness and battery cables on order. The back tires are toast. I am actually surprised that the right rear has not exploded from the significant sidewall crack in it. I plan to do as much as I can to get it back to operating condition. It actually ran in the Spring, because my son used it in his garden. But due to the half bare wires and bad battery cables, I wanted to do some TLC to get it running correctly. I don't see where to post pictures, or I would share a picture of it.

Thanks,
David

Welcome to the forum! Don't forget to prime the oil pump before you try to crank it, you can do a search and find out how.

Thanks for the advice and comments. I was glad to keep this Cub in the family and I hope to eventually roll it down to my son.

Welcome, from a fellow NC-er...Chapel Hill! Good to see the tractor staying in the family! If you get a chance, try to attend a Cubfest...a great chance to meet some active forum members, learn a lot about these tractors, and share the group knowledge by watching/helping with common issues with the cubs...plenty of opportunity for hands on learning! Good family fun, too!

The first Cubfest of the year is in a couple weeks down in Sneads, Florida...the DSCF (Deep South Cubfest). I will be passing near your zip code (picking up a tractor for another forum member), and you are welcome to hitch a ride down!! I'm driving a Ford Expedition, with lots of room for you and your son!
