Governor helical gear press fit?

Postby AG2014 » Wed May 29, 2019 11:51 am

Took the governor out of the '49 yesterday and the helical gear slipped right off the shaft. Is it supposed to be a press fit or something? There doesn't seem to be any features on the shaft to keep the two locked in rotation.
Also, the weight carrier (stamped sheet metal piece) has wallowed out holes from carrier pin wear. I would like to replace the carrier and pins but can't find just the carrier anywhere online. Anyone ever seen just the carrier for sale?

Good luck finding just the carrier...I had to buy an entire governor to get one.

Hi,
The gear is supposed to be a tight fit on the shaft, pressed on, I think.

J P Tractor salvage, at the bottom of the page, probably has a good used governor assembly.

Below are pages from the Cub parts manual showing the governor, if you need them.
The piece with the weights is number 28 in the pic, it is called a shaft in the description, there are 3 different ones, depending on the engine serial number. :)

I bent the shaft trying to press the shaft out of one assembly I had.

I have it in my office as a reminder to leave somethings alone.

Inairam, my thoughts exactly after I broke the carrier. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
