Changing brakes on cub

I cleaned everything up today. Nothing was really leaking. It was covered with years of dirt and grime mainly. I will be replacing all the gaskets and the seals when they arrive. Then the brakes!
After the right side is complete, I will tackle the left side. heaven knows what surprises I will fid on the left, but I would almost bet the woodruff key is missing!

I took the advice of the members here and decided that since it's apart I should order the transmission axle seals and replace them. I ended up cutting the rusted seat post off and of course my floor board is totally rusted out. I found some replacements on ebay and they are on the way. With the like new hood that I bought form Dale and all these new parts, old Nellie will be as new!

Is your front axle wedged? These have a tendency to try to flip over/fall off jack stands if you take off the right rear wheel/final without the front end wedged.

I will cut some wedges before I attempt to pull the extension off.

Hi,
The wedges are shown in Dale Finch's post about removing a final drive, it is in 1 of the links that I posted on page 1 of this post. Hammer them in tight.

Cubs didn't come with the style of seat yours has in your pic.
Below is listing for a new one at TM Tractor, you can look at the pics. It is the original style. The bolt pattern should match the pattern on the seat post top. They have other colors of fabric also.

There was originally a battery box. The rear light bolted onto the bracket on the rear of the battery box.

I just grabbed a seat and put it on. someone ( one of the previous owners?) welded a frame for the battery. If I ever restore it I will buy the correct parts. For now I am going to mow with it.

I am going to be replacing the same parts soon. I had my brakes fail while snow plowing down hill to the 55 mph road in front of the house. I dropped the blade hard and stopped before I entered the road. Let us/me k ow any difficult part and how you resolved them so I k ow what to look for!

offrink, bring your cub on down to the Barnyard Bash at the end of May...you should be able to get those brakes fixed with the help of some fine forum folks!!!

I ordered the seals and gaskets for the transmission side. Took off the right side extension tube and it was leaking a mixture of water and gear lube. I cleaned everything up and and when I pulled the retainer I discovered that it had an o-ring seal and steel shims, so the gaskets that i purchased were not needed. I cleaned the retainer and installed the seal. I installed the shims and reinstallef the retainer on the transmission. All went well until I was reinstalling right side extension tube. I was installing the bolts whe I looked down and saw another shim, which must of fell off when I initially disassembled everything.
I am sure glad that I found this when I did and not after the final drive was installed.

Good you are making some progress.
It sounds like the transmission has water in it, and oil. I don't know if you checked the trans oil level before you began work on the final drives. The trans commonly get water in them, from rain, or condensation inside the housing, over time. If it gets liquid above the level of the seals, the liquid can run out the seals.

I would change it's oil. The owner's manual shows how.
The drain plug is visible from under the platform.
The level plug is low on the left side. It holds 3 1/2 Pints of oil, to fill it to the level plug hole.
The filler plug is to the rear of the shifter.

If there is goop in the trans, the experts on here have said to fill it to the level plug hole with kerosene, and drive it around for 5 minutes, then drain it, and put in gear oil.
Or you can remove the shifter, and PTO, and rear cover, and wash it out.
