Had a Dr. appointment yesterday afternoon about 50 miles away, and our monthly tractor club meeting was in the evening, so I drove my Ranger instead of the Escape because it is a little easier to see while driving it at night. I went out to move the Ranger out of the garage and into the carport, and bring the Escape back in to the garage this afternoon, but the key would only go part way in the ignition. I fought with it for a while, and finally set off the alarm. didn't have the FOB with me, so I had to wait for the alarm to time out. Tried it a little more and decided to try the spare key. Was walking through the kitchen with the spare key in my hand, and thinking why didn't I just use the button on the key FOB to cancel the alarm. Suddenly I thought "The Ranger key does not have a built in FOB!!!". And my next thought was "You dumba$$, you were trying to start the Ranger with the Escape key." For 8 years the Escape was parked in tht sight with rare exceptions such as yesterday, and it was habit to pull out that key when I walked over to that spot.

Don't feel isolated John. There's probably thousands of us just like that!!!

Yup. Been there, done that, do it frequently. I have 3 sets of vehicle keys on my desk.

I don't find out that I picked up the wrong set of keys until the key doesn't fit the ignition switch.

Long before the electronics were imbedded in the key fob, I had two different keys cut in my Ford keys. One set of keys for two vehicles (I do miss that) reduced the size of my keyring. It was simple to use a triangular file to notch one side of the key to determine which way to insert the key.

I came out of Lowe's recently with a Lowe's employee pushing a cart to help me load. As I approached the vehicle I hit the FOB to open the hatch and nothing happened. Oh well, must be a dead battery in the FOB. No worries. I stuck my key in and it wouldn't turn. Hmmm. I had led him clear across the parking lot to an identical vehicle. No saving that one.
The only small consolation was that he was not that much younger than me so he passed on the opportunity to laugh.

hello all from the cool , dry deep south ( i thank Bob , our cool fronts come from the colorado area ) i spent 30 minutes at the house searching for the security lock keys for my boat , no luck . So i ran down to the shop and searched a while , still nothing . back to the house to check a spot . nope . back to the shop and there they were right on the nails that i hang various keys on . i had changed from a nylon strap key fob to a brass spring clip holder about 6 months ago .coppersmythe..............................................one small consolation , the shop is only about 2 blocks away .

When my Ranger was new I put a hard tonneau cover on it and added and electric tail gate lock that operated off the passenger door electric lock. The bad thing was you either had to have the Fob with you or use the key to unlock a door and push the unlock button to unlock the tailgate. I walked up behind it to open the tailgate and pushed the button on the Fob, heard the door locks click, and pulled on the tailgate handle, it did not move. Tried the lock again and heard the click, tailgate still locked. Walked up to the truck and pushed the button again so I could check if the passenger lock was working. The door click came from behind me. I was using the Fob for the Escort rather than the Ranger.

As a side note, due to the dust on our road the electric tail gate lock proved to be undependable and was replaced with a key type after a couple years.
