Fuel fittings

Need some help here please ....I suppose this question can be for any 5/16" fuel lines regardless of the make....but I get so bloody confused because I don't know the nomenclature. I am re-doing the fuel lines for my JD 3020 (and then I will redo all the farmalls) and...how does one identify the fittings? I hear 1/4"male, NPT, flair fitting, 5/16 female, etc...
Note the fittings for the fuel pump how would I "order up" the right angle fitting and the fittings that attach to them from below and above?
Also, the Zenith carb has a fuel inlet that has a small cylindrical screen and I am told it is a 1/8 NPT male with a filter screen and a 5/16OD flair...true? I don't see anything on it that is 1/8.

The 1/8 NPT is a tapered pipe thread size. The 1/8 refers to the ID of the pipe, not the dimension of the fitting. Same for all NPT. Best thing to do is take the old fitting to the auto parts store.

Mine would be a similar suggestion.

My local well stocked hardware store has knowledge people on hand. The staff is more than willing to help.

If you take in the part you are trying to get the correct plumbing fitting(s) for, the staff will probably be able to look at the part and tell you the correct fitting size.

The store may let you try the plumbing fitting to see if it's correct.

Find the man or woman in their 50's-60's-70's who actually knows how to look stuff up in a book, they'll be the one(s) who can tell you what you have just by looking at it.

In addition to Don McCombs advice may I add: tubing fittings are usually flare (as the name implies) or compression-which uses a ferule on tubing to make the seal. The size usually refers to the id of the tubing but you can specify OD or ID. The fuel fitting threads on a Cub carb and shutoff valve is 1/2 x 20 (and probably other as well). That's 1/2 inch bolt threads and you have to specify what you want. Just ask for a 5/16 brake line tubing and it comes with the correct male tubing fitting that will thread into the carb and the fuel shutoff. Once you determine the correct size tubing (or pipe) you can change to another type threads/size as needed using adapters made for this purpose. Here's and example of a 1/8 pipe thread quick open valve connected to 5/16 tubing with adapters and used on a Cub fuel line as a secondary shutoff valve.Hope this helps.
