Oops the spring broke.

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

Oops the spring broke.

Postby UK-Cub » Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:04 am

The sub forum heading invites anything not specific tractor related so here goes: it will involve workshop work.

Not sure what the weight rating on my settee / couch is, but I'm 99 kg say 215 lbs since my accident, growing old but more specifically idleness and overeating.

Anyway, some time ago, maybe longer than that even, I sat down, there was a 'crack' and I was lower to the ground than was usual.

Today I decided to investigate and found two unusual, well I'd never seen them like this before, seat base springs were broken.

I think I know how I'm going to mend them, that's tomorrow's project. It's 3 o'clock in the afternoon over here and though it's 8 deg C courtesy of the North Atlantic Drift and Gulf Stream, the sun, that didn't get too high in these latitudes is well on the way to going down behind the hills.

If your repair doesn't work, that is a common upholstery spring. Often called a couch spring or zig zag spring. Any upholstery shop should be able to supply you with them if needed. I think I'm like you, I'd rather try to fix it first.

Yes Bob,

I think my parents bought me broken or maybe just susceptible to breakage, toys for Christmas and birthdays, knowing I'd get much more fun out of mending rather than playing with them. Grandad gave me presents of his tools each year, I knew they weren't new but I loved them then, I cherish then 60+ years on.

When I bought my first motorcycle in 1968, brand new, my mother wondered how soon it would be apart. It was a BSA, and it only took a few months. I got married the year after and it got 'converted' to a washing machine. Took up bikes again in the 80s till I was brought to a rather abrupt stop in 2002 by a car mistiming a turn, ouch.

The fix for the springs is in my mind, should only take an hour. I think you would say its out of left field. I know that means it's not a regular solution, but apart from thinking it's from baseball, I've no idea why.

Cheers.

Decided to use two short lengths of 1" box section. Measured pitch of the spring, 1" and thickness, near enough 4mm. Trimmed ends of the breaks so that I would end up with, coincidentally 1" straight lengths. First time got it wrong so shortened spring and drilled new hole at 2" centre. With wires / springs in the box section wrapped them in Gorilla tape for protection. Installed the repaired springs and reinstated cover with Gorilla tape. Will have to take care when lowering myself onto the seat.

Took longer than expected, friends arrived with an Advent calendar, looks to be a box of beer.
