I had a pallet with two rear weights sitting out by the firewood pile for a couple years. The other day I moved to pallet up to the shop so I could clean the weights and give them a coat of paint. Today I went out to move the pallet into the shop to start work on them. First I wanted to flip them over to start on the back side. I started to go back for a pair of gloves but decided not to because I didn't think I would pinch my fingers. I flipped the first weight over with no problem. When I stuck my hand under the second one and began to lift, I began to feel a sharp pain in my middle finger. Just as I flipped it over. I ran like the devil. I had put my finger square on a large wasp nest and the wasp in charge was letting me know. He got me several times, but fortunately his 837 buddies let me go.

OUCH. Dang those stings hurt. Have to watch for wasps in the hog barn - main storeage shed.

I check for snakes and wasps before flipping stuff over.

There is a weed that grows in most of our yards (us that dont poison the ground that is) called plantain.

No not the bananna looking thing!

This is broadleaf plantain, and grows fine in Ohio.

When ever I get stung I pick some leaves of the nearest plantain (clean preferably), put them in my mouth, and chew them up into a saliva mixed goo (poultice), then plaster it on the sting.

I try to leave it on as long as possible through the day.
Wrapping with something to hold it in place, or under the sock if on leg, ankle / foot.

And then (usually) next day I am back to normal, no swelling, no itching.

I know that really hurts. They seem to ramp up their anger this time of year...annoyed that winter is coming I suppose. We have these hornets (don't know what kind) that make a paper nest on the ground. I have seen them while brush hogging in the middle of fields or rather seen the land trust weed whackers run from them. They don't seem to bother me sitting up high on the 3020 as I run over them

We use meat tenderizer on bee stings, it works pretty good.

I use an antihistamine immediately after the sting. Reduces the swelling and the itching afterward.

I coated it with Neosporum right away. No itching or throbbing after that. Swelling stopped as well. No wild weed chewing required.

Carb cleaner sprayed on them, does them in! I guess they run on dirty carba!

Am old-timer told me that spitting tobacco juice on a sting or cut works too. Pounding a different finger or your toe would probably work.
