UPS, USPS or FedEx?

Postby ricky racer » Tue Jun 06, 2023 6:09 pm

I ordered a new motorcycle helmet from a vendor in Las Vegas, Nevada last week. The seller provided me with a UPS tracking number. The package shipped last Thursday, via UPS from Las Vegas to Hodgkins, Illinois. It departed the Hodgkins facility on Monday and delivered to the USPS facility in St. Joseph, Michigan and today it was shipped via USPS to the Niles, Michigan USPS facility and should be delivered to me tomorrow.

So, my UPS tracking number was changed to a USPS tracking number. When I did a search on Google using the USPS tracking number, I was given the option of tracking via USPS or FedEx. I can track my package using the USPS tracking number on the FedEx website. I thought these three companies were competitors with one another. I'm really surprised that UPS would not deliver my package via their own drivers instead of passing it along to their competitors....

I have found that UPS has USPS deliver a lot of packages at the tail end of the shipping cycle. There must be some economic advantage to it.

May be. There is a 16 unit housing complex just south of me. The UPS and FeDEX delivers there daily. The drivers pass by my front door while my orders are usually delivered by USPS in the mailbox.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Competition... Well, Fedex and UPS are competitors, but the USPS is not. UPS has a deal with USPS for the "last mile" delivery for low cost shipping (selected by the company doing the shipping)

USPS also has a cooperative agreement with DHL.

That arrangement is called Surepost. I think all 3 shippers have that arrangement with USPS. If I order something from someone which allows me to select the shipping method, Surepost is generally one of the choices. It is a little less expensive, although UPS drives past my house taking my package to the post office.

In my experience, the USPS is the weak link in the entire system.

Will not argue with you there. But I have had some problems with a fed ex driver in the past.

Not surprising! The government can't run anything well. Oh yeah, now they want to run your healthcare....

They already do; Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, National Health Service, and a bunch of other government funded health services.
