Why am I not using seatbelt on my tractor ?

Postby Bezirk » Wed Nov 26, 2014 8:59 pm

After reading the post from Dennis r/e the tractor accident which resulted in the loss of a life, I asked myself this afternoon as I prepared to plow snow, why am I not using my seatbelt.
Self had no reasonable answer to the question, the tractor is equipped with ROPS and a seatbelt. I therefore decided to use my common sense and hook the belt. This is not a Cub, but rather a green tractor and the one I use most of the time for working around our place or in our small field. I ALWAYS buckle up in the car or truck and now will continue to use the belt on the tractor, thanks Dennis for the wake up call it may have help save a TOG (tough old goat ) !

Berlin, It's too bad that some simple version of a ROPS can't be designed for a Cub. There have been more than a few roll overs, but fortunately no fatalities.

Just in case anybody is inspired from reading this to add a seatbelt to their tractor, I would not advise it unless you have an engineered roll over protection system (ROPS). Without a ROPS, a seatbelt will keep you attached to a rolling tractor and eliminate your chances of jumping free. This is the same reason I do not have seatbelts in my 1953 Willys Jeep. No rollbar, no seatbelts.

The very last 140s were available with a ROPS, I am not sure that a Cub wouldn't self-destruct if it experienced a roll-over with a ROPS attached, assuming the ROPS held.

I agree with Al. The Cub was never designed for a rops system and even if you installed one, it would give you a false sense of security. I think it is better to be aware of the dangers of operating older tractors and use your safety knowledge and common sense when operating.

A seat belt can also keep you from being catapulted from the seat of your tractor when you overload the front end loader....

That 140 looks like a high crop.

My tractor that I was referring to has a loader and as we know when bucket is raised the center of gravity is shifted , that is a one of the major reasons that I have decided to use the seatbelt. I have no intention of adding a seatbelt to any of my Cubs .

Wonder how long it took him to pry the seat out from between his cheeks. I must admit, Ive had some moments before that the pucker factor sure came into play.
