Just removed clutch from 185, couple questions..

Postby shibby » Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:46 pm

Hey all, I have a 185 that the clutch started to slip in. It would barely move when out into gear. Sometimes it would, but it would be impossible to go up the slightest incline, especially when warm.

I really don't know much about clutch systems and how they work. I finally got the whole clutch removed today, and my questions are:

1) How do I know if the throwout bearing is no good?

2) How do I know if the clutch disc is bad? Can I measure the thickness (if so, what should it be)?

3) How do I know if the pressure plate is still good?

I know I should probably just replace all three components, but money is super-tight right now, so I'd hate to buy something if I didn't have to.

Any help is so very appreciated, thanks! :)

If the pressure plate isn’t scored and the fingers look good I’d install three new springs in it.
If the disc isn’t worn to the rivets, if there’s plenty of fiber left on the disc your ok. How’s the splines in the clutch disc?
Throwout bearing doesn’t have too much wear or play in the bearing your ok if it doesn’t have any play.
Your flywheel isn’t scored your ok. It can be turned.
Check your pilot bearing in the flywheel for wear.
How does the drivevshaft look? Are the splines ok?

I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Awesome, thanks so much for the info!

Where exactly would the scoring be on the pressure plate, if there is any? I need to clean it up really good and look.

Does the inside of the throwout bearing turn? It seems like only the outer part turns. Should it fit tightly on the driveshaft?

Thanks again, I really appreciate it! :)

Pressure plate - inspect the fingers where the throwout contacts the fingers. Shouldn't be grooves where the throwout rides on the fingers.

You mentioned that the clutch was slipping. Gotta find the source. Maybe splines of the clutch are worn? Maybe the clutch hub rivets are gone?
Replace whatever is causing the slipping.

Thanks for the help! I cleaned everything up in the ultrasonic cleaner. Here's some pics. By the way, while I was loading some topsoil with the FEL, I smelled that burning clutch smell very strongly. It wasn't long after that when I could barely move. The splines all seem fine on that clutch disc, and driveshaft.

For the pressure plate.. does the surface of the back of it matter much? It's pretty rusty and not smooth at all.

If you're referring to the surface that the disc mates to, yes, it should be smooth and free of rust.
