Carburetor Struggles

Postby DaddySamster » Wed Apr 01, 2020 8:12 pm

Cub Lo-Boy came with a Zenith that looks just like a 1374E but without the 5th bowl screw hole out front. Rebuild kits for the 1374E have enough working parts, but I have been unable to find a specific part number (and no, there is no visible stamp or tag). Bought a rebuilt from Yesterday's tractor that looked exactly the same but I fear that was just by chance.

Now that a year has passed I have the same problem as before, bowl either doesn't fill or when it does the needle doesn't fully seal. And no, another new needle helps not at all. It's either starved for fuel or flooded - nothing in between and the float levels included in the kits are WAAAY off.

Can anyone on here recommend someone, a member, sponsor, or anyone else who knows these carbs and rebuilds them for others. Surely there is some little trick or piece of experience I'm missing. I'm prepared to buy a 3rd (or maybe its the 4th) carb or pay for a rebuild but really want to know what I have been doing wrong for the past 4 years. I've been successfully working on tractors, cars, and small engines since high school (40 years ago) and this is just killing me.

Any help much appreciated

Sam

So the black neoprene tip wears. The original equipment had a metal needle all the way to the tip. The cheap rebuild kits have the neoprene tip needle. Replace the neoprene needle with an original equipment needle.

Contact Morgan at McDonald Carbs and see what he suggests. They have a new needle and seat design similar to the old Holley's, but I don't know if it will fit on a Zenith or not.

My needles came from Morgan when I decided not to keep buying whole kits, new one went in Tuesday and almost a seal but not quite.

Anyone have a diagram how the spring that winds around the float pivot pin is supposed to be installed; pushing up or down on the float?

Super fine valve lapping compound and lap the new needle to the seat.

Look in the PDF Manuals section under Service Manuals, Zenith Carb, Zenith Carb Manual. It may be of some help.

When i have a needle and seat problem i can ususllu fix it buy chucking a Q tip in my cordless drill and using toothpase as the polishing compound and use it to polish the brass seat. After that i use a viton tipped needle as the OEM metal tip needle don't seal about half the time. I set the float level just a bit low also.
YMMV
