Front cover gaskit

Postby wagonmaster » Wed Feb 05, 2020 10:15 pm

I am rebuilding the engine on my 184 with a gasket set from Hamilton Bob. After putting the front cover back on, I found a second front cover gasket in the set. The second one has the gasket circle all the way around the governor area and the one I installed only goes around the outside perimeter. Is this going to be a problem or should I take it apart and use the other gasket wile it's still on the engine stand ?

The front cover gasket is different for distributor vs magneto ignition. It sounds like you installed the magneto gasket.

On a 184 I'd change it to use the one with the gasket all the way around the governor.

What does it matter? If a cub has a mag and you change it to a distributor, do you have to change to cover gasket too? I’ve put many distributors on Cubs that had mags with no problems.

I think it just keeps the governor clean(er) by sealing the back side.
I don't think anyone would do the work to replace a gasket, but at this point, wagonmaster already has the front cover accessible.

It looks like the front cover gasket change occurred at engine serial number 139517, which would be around August 1951.
I think this was after the change to distributor as standard for the Cub.
I do not know why the change or if it really matters but they must of had some reason. :?:
Perhaps Jim Becker can shed some light on the subject.

I guess my opinion is a little different than others. I believe there was a change in the block at the serial number mentioned, and the lip around the governor made a full circle. the gasket should be used that matches the front of the block.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

You are probably right. Looking at the Cub database there appears to be a change in the block part number from R3 to R4 at around the same time in Aug 1951.
